I would like to thank everyone as well: Mahonri, superchemicalgirl, everyone who offered contests, dsqard, and all participants. I have enjoyed sharing this experience with everyone and appreciate the expertise and support!

But chickening goes on...

We had huge storms last night of course, and we were very lucky to have been relatively unscathed yet again. However, the power went out, and I have little chickies in the brooder! Luckily, when the storm became violent, I heated water in a kettle and poured it into a large Pyrex bowl with a plastic lid. I wrapped it up in a dish towel and stuck it in the toaster oven for insulation.

The power went out about forty minutes later, so I put the wrapped, lidded bowl of hot water into the brooder. The chicks snuggled around the bowl, and I got up every hour to keep an eye on the temperature. When I needed to add more hot water, the electric stove was not working of course, so I had DH relight the pilot light on the ventless gas heating stove (which you are not supposed to put things on...) and heated the water, slowly, on that.

The electricity came back on midmorning and all chickies are okay, but I was wondering what other folks to do deal with power outages when chicks are young. I was thinking I might buy some of those air-activated ThermaCare wraps that stay warm for 8 hours or so. Has anyone tried that?

Here's a gratuitous growing chick picture. All the EEs have cute, puffy cheeks now.

If my neighbor has power I do rice in socks, microwave it and put it in the brooder covered in shavings.
If there is no power anywhere then it gets tricky.
lost a lot of eggs last year due to power outages. I had over 70 eggs in lockdown and hatched 10. Yes, this coming from the "best hatch" winner LOL

I seem to remember someone on here talking about hatching Marans eggs and what they do differently for them than they do for their other eggs. (Sanding?)

I was just gifted some Marans eggs and I have never incubated this breed before. I am elated and scared that I will do something wrong.

Anyone have any tips to share????

ChestnutRidge how is Lazarus doing? I know people have used those chemical hand warmers to keep shipped eggs from freezing in winter, so I would think that those chemical wraps would work pretty well.

Patchesnposies, Chookschick is the person who sands the eggs. I would PM her and ask her about it.
