Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

Ok I sent out eggs to the two winners today. I hope they get 100% hatches this time.

Hint! Use chookschick's cheat sheet. First you have to say that 10 times really fast.

Linda where is your house???????????? We were in escrow with one, but looking for another when we moved here. This is supposed to be my temp housing, but stuck here now. Really sucks! I'm thinking really cheap land and an RV at this point. Would be better than where I am. LOL Anyway I'm really excited for you.

I have more eggs in lockdown, so hopefully I'll have something hatch by the 30th and since my broody was broken towards the end, I have no idea how far along these eggs are, but I have some that looked like they should be locked down also, so they're in there too. Not real hopeful, but who knows.

I just went to check MY brooder to look for their oil glands but my babies were all asleep. I didn't have the heart to wake them. I'll check later and let you know. I know my older hens have them.

I didn't see any just like his, so I'm hoping it's not irritated or something. Let me know if any are as large (say, 3/16" diameter) and reddish...
Thank you!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if his is irritated. Little Lazarus is having a bit of a struggle and if the other chicks are pecking at it, I bet it's irritated. Perhaps that's why you noticed it. I would keep an eye on him. If the others keep having a go at him, you might need to isolate him for a bit until he's stronger.

I just checked the others. They do seem to have something there, but smaller and less red. Maybe it is a tail or oil gland.
Thanks, guys. I might be just a little paranoid.

Paranoia is understandable. I'm experiencing the same and I don't have a runt!!!!!

I think its just the oil glad.......maybe its a little swollen because the others are pcking it.

I checked my little ones and the gland was hard to find. I could feel it but couldn't see it - and they weren't amused. So your little guy's is likely irritated. Same advice as before, keep an eye on him and isolate him from the others, if necessary. (Trouble is the redder and bigger it gets, it might get worse because it will become more obvious to the other chicks and they will be drawn to it - and it will get bigger and redder and so on ....)

I am buying a small, foreclosed house up in the Sierra foothills, at elevation 2080 feet. On .62 of an acre!!!! It's in El Dorado County, in the zip code that serves Fairplay, Omo Ranch and Somerset - my address will be in Somerset. (I know what it is, but I'm being cagey, as the place will still be advertised until all the contract paperwork is signed by both sides. I've signed MY bits.)

Thank you for your advice, BarnGoddess and BHep!

I'm sure that's exactly what it is. We'll keep an eye on it, and if it isn't looking better in a day or so, we'll set him up with his own little brooder.
I can't tell you how much of a help everyone has been throughout this hatch! It has made such a difference for me.

to all!

ChestnutRidge, If you have any Blu-kote (or other blue colored antiseptic spray used to treat animal wounds) spray a spot on a paper towel and use a q-tip to dab a bit on the spot. The other chicks are probably drawn to the redness of it. The blu-kote will act as a camo of sorts.

I would have done the same thing. hehe

Linda I'm so happy for you.

If the VA ever decideds I get VA benefits, my daughter is going to help me find something on the cheaper side. Lots of houses around here really cheap, but most of the area is really bad. Huge yeards and small houses.
