Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I need a better camera! Going to be setting some of these for Easter. My girls are starting off with a a kind of a gray egg and then I get this. Hoping to get a deeper violet or lavender one of these days.

Here it is with eggs from birds I'll be adding to my project

What breed is laying this?

You make me want to go catfish fishing. Bait the hooks, throw line out. Crack drink on pier. Relax until pole starts to bounce.

... I wonder if Maine has catfish?

We have signs here telling you not to eat fish caught in the river, lakes, etc. Fertilizer and pesticide runoff in the Midwest will make you glow in the dark.

Boyfriend got me some poppyseeds! So... my first attempt at poppyseed loaf, like old times.

It's pretty good but not quite the right taste. Anyone have a Polish, Russian, Lithuanian, Slav, etc grandma they can ask about the contents of the filling? This is poppy seeds, honey, eggs, sugar, raisins and butter. I know I'm missing something. I'm pretty sure it's not orange or lemon zest which I found online in another recipe.

Asking Mom, and her Croatian boyfriend...hang on...

Really?
I LOVE the smell of citrus blooming. But I also love the smell of dead skunk and dairy farms.
One of us must be crazy.

X2.

I'm soooooooo copying this. I love to make people snap out of their paradigms for a split second. Life is too short.

Got 10 eggs out of 15 hens today. I really need to figure out who the freeloaders are and rehome or dispatch them to the freezer...

Well, I'm going to hit the sac early tonight. The 7 hours of driving yesterday did me in.

I suppose I should also make a 'general announcement" that I deactivated my FB account. I've had a goodly number of peeps e-mailing me asking why I de-friended them.
Technically, I didn't, I just decided it wasn't for me at this time.

DW wants me to get back on so I can get contact info for friends as DS#1 just became engaged to be married on the 20th of June.
Crazy kids. Don't know how they are going to make a living, all I can do is have faith and pray for them.

And it's our final week folks. I'll be checking the mail everyday WED, THROUGH Saturday and I hope they all make it before Noon on Saturday. I've still got to get the Genesis out of storage... probably tomorrow morning.

I've also got to fix a screw hole in the Brinsea... but I've got some awesome JB Weld that I feel certain will do the trick!

G'nite everybody!

I haven't deactivated...but I don't ever go there. Kudos to you. I think FB has horns.

My Kansas eggs on are on their way!!!!

Not officially. I printed the label, but they'll go out at 5:30 tonight on the truck that goes straight to the airport. I'm sending a note to help you figure out what each of the breeds is...and photocopying the note for the other folks getting grab bags from me. I can probably do one or two more if someone needs eggs. I've sold the last batch of frizzles, and I'm out of Orps.

I'm not sure what I'll be hatching...oh, yeah...PROJECTS!!!!

Chocolate Silkies (the true chocolate gene), Marans, OEs, Rocks, Cochins, Ameraucanas, Polish and Orps.

Maybe a pea egg or two will get tossed in if the girls start to lay during the next month, but obviously not for Easter. First Guinea egg of the season just showed up, SparkyCrows tells me...I bet she sets it today!

It's cold and soggy out again. I'm sure the moisture is good for us, but I want a spring like my favorite one: soft drizzle from 3-5 am 4 days a week, sunny each day. That is the best EVER!!

I'm getting more grapevines in today to shade the runs, and a cherry tree is joining my pear tree in my espalier fence. Love espaliers.

SCG, Mom says she uses the canned paste like you can get for Kolache filling and augments it with seeds. She sometimes makes it like a Povitica prior to pasting it. Then it ends up super layered and wonderful.

When she said that, it reminded me we have a place here in Kansas City called Strawberry Hill that is like a little Croatia where you can get all kinds of Slavic stuff. There's a Strawberry Hill Povitica Co. that makes Povitica (poh-vi-teet-zuh) and ships it all over the country, in different flavors...including poppy seed. Mom says the trick with Povitica is you're supposed to pull the dough thin enough to see through, over the whole table.

It's an amazing dessert bread, and is really incredible to try.

Edited to add a blog post that has links to a BUNCH of recipes.

Yay! That is awesome. I would love to have one, congratulations.

I do love the smell of citrus blooming. We have a lemon plant right here in the house, which gets lemons the size of grapefruit on it!

I have a lemon tree growing in the tower, It's just a baby so no fruit yet but I'm hoping later this summer

See I am the opposite of you buckabucka. I like the time change because I don't do my chores until after I get home from work. The only thing I do in the morning is toss hay out for the horses, let them out for the day and make sure the chickens have water (months of freezing temps mean putting warm water out every morning, come on spring!) This time of year, I know I will have light to get the heavy duty chores done when I get home.

I don't understand why Alaska participates. I mean we do everything in the dark for 4 months, then just as it's getting light they whack us with the time change and suddenly we're back in the dark again

Then we get to see the light, and it stays on for 4 months, and then when we are just getting a routine back of chores in the dark - WHAMMO - they mess with that schedule too.

We just can't win.

I think we need updated Emu pics Kathy!!!!

Thanks for the reminder. I have a pastry rising in the oven for DS. Just need to add heat. BRB
