As far as the turkeys go, it seems like I need to hatch them for next years NYD hatch...

I'm a pushover. But as far as chickens go... the inn is full, I think I've got at least 10 roos to go to freezer camp. The Easter Hatch roos usually end up going to freezer camp in October - any hatching later than that and it's usually too cold to do it comfortably, so really... this is it unless something awesome comes down the pike. How long does it take to get a turkey to a good butchering weight?


FB16 - you'd be surprised but grey hairs start sprouting around that age, anyway. And for some reason they do strange things like sprout in the middle of your forehead between your eyebrows and grow about an inch long overnight so you look like an old rhinoceros. Consequently, it also almost always happens the night before you're rushing to get ready in the morning and then don't really inspect your face well before leaving the house.

Grey hairs are sneaky like that.

I hatched the turkeys last year for the Easter hatch and the tom we had for Thanksgiving was about 12lbs. The hen we ate for Christmas was only around 9lbs. These are a heritage breed so they don't grow real fast and they don't get huge (relative to the Broad Breasted types) which is why I wanted this breed. If it is just DH and I for the holiday, we don't need a 27lb bird. I have been thinking of getting some of those Narragansetts since they look pretty but I am not sure how big they get. Input anyone?

FB16, I got my first grey hair when I was 18. I blame my ex for it since it was only a few months after I started dating him. The rest of them I still blame on him. LOL Just remember, about $10 gets you any color you like. LOL

Mahonri, I hope you have gone to the doctor and gotten something to put on that burn. Nothing against your being a dentist, but you need to see a doc if you haven't. Prayers coming your way!

Oh my gosh, I slept all night! Unusual. It is 5AM now, and I am packing eggs to ship out.

The instructions are for damaged air cells. Candle them to see what kind of shape the air cell is in. Mine that came from Washington did not have air cells in 9 of the 12. The air cells are back now, but a couple of them look like hourglasses instead of nice ovals like they are supposed to look. Oh yes, only 6 of them developed. I am not complaining though.

The Basque eggs will probably be fine. Someone told me it's the low pressure in the cargo plane that hurts the air cell. James ships his eggs in foam cutouts of some type. This is supposed to put counter pressure on the egg not allowing it to expand as much, so the air cell does not get messed up. People often report hatching 11 to 14 out of 15 eggs shipped.

Ok, that's my plan any way....
