Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Hey, did anyone else notice that the egg shells get darker in the 'bator? The dark brown eggs (BCM and Wellies) are REALLY dark now and the blue EE eggs are BLUE. Is that a common occurance? Remember, this is my first time.

I can't remember about my Black Coppers' shells. On a recent hatch, however, my New Hampshire shells did look quite toasted compared to when they went in. I guess it's sometimes common. I didn't notice a darkening of my green egg shells.

He's coming over tomorrow to fill the 50 gallon duck pool after I dump and clean it. I think that's going to be the highlight of his day.

I think it could possibly be the highlight of my day to fill your 50 gallon duck pool. I'm not kidding. As for the little neighbor boy, he'll probably always remember filling your duck pool and watching your ducks. And when he grows up (or next month?), he might just get a few of his own since he's already familiar with them because of the cool Bird Lady neighbor.

Well that took almost an entire HOUR to catch up!

Off to feed and water and gather eggs. I got 11 eggs yesterday from my flock of 15 laying girls.
I doubt I'll get 6 today!

See ya in an hour!

Well I candled this morning.

My shipped eggs aren't doing well at all. :( Ordered 42 silkie eggs and set 34 because there were some broken ones. After I candled today there were two more cracked and one of the cracked ones was clear and then I dropped it on my toe! Yuck! So now i have 33 set and one that is cracked. Of the 33 that are still in there only 5 have for sure development in them. I can see the veins and they look good. I have several clears, one that has a bubble in it that moves when I move the egg - ruptured air cell? and then I have several that I am not sure about because they arent clear and they do have maybe one big vein in there? I tried to get pics but my camera wasn't cooperating.

I also have in there my hens eggs and OMG they are developing. Which means they will be Chicken/Guinea cross! I didnt think my guineas were breeding them. Plus I have my father in law's blue bantam cochin eggs in there too. Total I still have 42 eggs in the turner 7 blue cochin, 2 chicken/guinea, and 33 silkie eggs.

My duck eggs are muscovies and will hatch a couple weeks after the chicks so I didnt include them in the easter hatch but I am so excited I hahve to tell yall what they are doing. I don't have a turner in there and I am turning them by hand but..... they are developing! I know day 5 is a little early to candle muscovy ducks because they take 35 days but i had to take a peek and I can see the spider.. That's what I call it anyways, the red dot with a few veins coming off of it. Yay!

heu did u get the silkies from cjsilkies if so please do not throw away give a few more days her shells are usually harder then other eggs and the membranes are tougher so it makes it harder to candle i just candled a few eggs from her at first i thought they were clearn glad i took another look because i coulf see movement in the eggs so i got 2 flashlights out and used them both to give more light and sure enough there was development

Or kooky bird lady neighbor?

Yeah... I think the "CrazyNeighborLady" works both directions.
I am the lady with 66 chickens and 5 ducks... soon to be turkeys.

She did have the audacity today to ask me what I was going to do with the ducks (she found out I was sending 3 to freezer camp) - and pretty much was saying she wanted to roast one. Uhm... did you monitor the incubator temps and humidity? Did you feed the ducklings? Take care of them? Moved them upstairs and down each day for their bath even when they got really heavy and big? Clean the tub after they'd been in it? Bought any food? Cleaned their brooder or their coop? Helped set up the coop? Came over when it was freezing to give them fresh water?

I didn't think so. What makes you think I'm going to give you a duck? After I process it, of course.
