Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I am amazed at how 1 week after the fact, folks are still wanting to join because they hadn't heard about the Easter Hatch a long.

Has the new format made us all that much more "invisible"?

What do you think is the reason?
It's because not all folks are BYC aholics! Ooops, did I just say that out loud? Really though, they may not have seen it in the few times a week they get on the internet. ?? Maybe? Just a thought. ??

Had to share a picture of one of Cowgirls Ameraucana babies..and then a bunch in a box that I put them in to make it to the living room for some pics. Lots of blues! Just what I wanted..and the blacks..oh my goodness, these babies are adorable little fluff balls!
POOF!

And there's my morning catch up...have to reply to some posts, always fun. Then I get back on night and you all have to see me post more replies...getting ready for church now..good luck on your lesson Mahonri.

We have one very much like this! She is probably about 4 weeks ole or maybe three...but is SOOOO tiny and not a bantam breed she is actually an ameraucana black/lav! She had a VERY bad splayed leg and can only EVER be a pet...she could stumble and has always had so much heart...she was got from a breeder locally who asked me if I wanted to cull her! as she she was loading my chicks in a box...I of course was horrified, no I do NOT wanna kill a chick no thanks! She laughed at me and put the baby in the box with the others...when I got it home she REALLY declined to the point we thought she would die....she didnt and is getting stronger every day if she ever gets big I will be surprised and she walks SO much better but if she ever walks normally it will be a miracle! some thing about her tugs at your heart strings...i hope she makes it she has had so much EXTRA help with food and nutrition....I think a huge part of it...her splayed problem was soo bad that taping didnt help at all she could not move at all so I removed it and then when she seemed better I put her in the bigger brooder where she HAD to move around to get to food and water and avoid bigger birds stepping on her...she has learned to scramble out of the way and it has made her much much stronger!! She really migh make it now! she needs a name I'm sure she is staying her as a pet.

I had a chick hatch last week with problems. It was slightly small, hatched during the night, very wet and covered with membrane. When I found it in the morning, it's chin was dried to it's chest, it's left wing was dried to it's cheek and it's entire right side was dried to the floor of the incubator. After much working at it, I dampened it enough to get it off the floor, let it rest, then worked on washing the hard shell of membrane from it's body. The whole chick felt crispy. It couldn't stand and it's right leg was just wrong, but it was chirping lustily. I knew it would never be other than a pet, since it had issues, but I decided to try and save it.

Well, little Penelope finally took her first step today at 9 days old. I'm not quite sure what's wrong with it, but it folded completely to the inside behind her bottom, so that both legs crossed like a plus sign. I kept them tape hobbled with a pipe cleaner brace between them for the first 5 days, but that didn't seem to help. Her toes also curled on the good foot, but that corrected after taping for one day.

She got her name because I needed a pirate name (peg leg), so she was named for Penelope Cruz from the Johnny Depp movie. I'm pretty sure it's a pullet, she has absolutely no comb development.

For the past nine days, I've held her up to food and water many times per day. She started eating food at 2-3 days. I started her on nestling food (from my finches). It's super finely ground. I would hold her over a papertowel and sprinkle pinches of food a few grains at a time to get her attention, kind of like a hen pecking the ground to teach her chicks to eat. Once she figured it out, she really started shoveling it down. She particularily likes the thistle seed in the mix and will pick them out. It took her 5-6 days to figure out drinking. Up until then every drop she drank was from me pushing her beak into the water. Actually, all this time I've been giving her Pedialyte for the electrolytes. The first time she dipped her beak by herself, I was thrilled.

I've had to keep her on rubbermaid shelf liner or towels so she could get a grip with her toes. I've been exercising her legs and toes all this time (good thing it was my week off work). Yesterday for the very first time, she pulled herself up onto her feet by herself for the first time. Up until then, she totally got around by scooting around on her chest, just pushing with her good foot. I really wondered what I would do with a pet chicken that couldn't stand up.

Today, she actually took her first step!!!!!! She has always been able to move her leg, just couldn't draw it under herself. She only managed to take a couple of steps before falling back down, but I consider this amazing progress.

Keep your fingers crossed for Penelope.

update on princess!
Ok so she got her stitches out and the wounds look great! Dry and healing really well no weeping or sweeling and she acts like she is feeling great...she got to go back out to the coop yesterday and sleep with the other silkies...maybe we are reading into it but all the silkies huddle now and don't seem happy out in the coop so we are moving them this week end hopefully into their own coop up here by the house...I will post pics of the progress on building our silkie house. They just seem scared now ....only want to come put when we are there ..AS a matter of fact all the bantams are like this too they wont come out unless we are there and go back in when we leave the yard...amazing...so they are being brought up with the silkies...near the house and activity and a lcosed yard smaller for them so they will feel more secure....gotta go work guess I'll catch up later...wish I knew what was going on with the contests and stuff...everyone is sooo talented and creative....my vote on the egg art (sorry)

ould be #10 as that was amazing!!!! how was that done?

sooo...i was up all night checking the hovabator...stable. wake up and its 105. Turn it down...drops to 100. Check back an hour later 105! It was by my LG which was stable, now its by my HM bator which is stable..so it can't be the environment. What a waste of money on eggs and a defective incubator! On another note, DD changed my pullets names from Spoony, Froony and Sporky. To Cubert, Butters and Munchies. She also was playing with a maraca which apparently is a drug and she's a druggie. I'm not sure where she learned that. Preschool? I thought maybe she meant drum, but that would mean she's a drummie. hmmmmm.

ok. so im editing this bcuz apparently some info was mixed up along the way .
was origionally told the calendar contest was open to everyone. so i was entering then learned it was false info.
so sorry for the mixup. and just ignore this post.
