Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I'm sad to hear about your losses, superchemicalgirl and rebelINny. These wonderful feathered friends have so much personality. /hugs

My 3/11 batch is starting to hatch... and they are only 6 days ahead of the 3/17s for this Hatch-A-Long. Goodness, we're certainly getting down to the wire!

You know it is not going to be a really good hatch when the boxes come in looking like this

I talked to USPS today. THere service could be quite a bit better . . . and I'll leave it at that for now, so I am on the look out for a regular supply of quality boxes and "major foam"--do you purchase or scavenge??

I sent out 2 boxes for the March swap both ended up with broken eggs! Most likely it was an "error" in our outgoing PO. Grrrr....

My sweet Buff Orpington Roo died today

I have hatched so many of his babies and he was so gentle and handsome! I am going to miss him. The other roo in the pen beat him up it seems.

I'm sooooo sorry! I hope you have one of his sons as a back-up.

I actually don't have any pure's that are his sons

At least none that I know for SURE! However I'm going to watch as I still have a couple sets of eggs that I know he fertilized in the incubator. If I see a buff born with white legs.......I'll keep it! Cause it is likely a pure.

Not quite sure what happened this morning. I went to Farm and Fleet and left with 14 chicks, 6 Turkens (I have always had a soft spot for them), 3 White Crested Black Polish, 2 Silver laced Polish, and 3 Silkies (I think they are porcelain). If you add them to the 37 eggs growing in my incubator right now (if I get a decent hatch rate), my brooder should be nice and "full" by the end of next weekend. Chicken math is great.

Well, today is Day 13 (312 hours). My picture was rushed on this particular evening (these pics are all my Easter Hatch eggs which are 2 days ahead of the rest), so it's not-so-great.

But look what happens in Photoshop when I "equalize."

Much more interesting! I managed better pics for Day 14, so - until tomorrow!

BTW, I think my air cells are definitely a bit small, but others have air cells which are huge, so I am just staying the course on that one...

well i now know what they mean by when one goes broody they all go broody i came home today to a second hen broody 6 days after my first one of this year and she is more nasty than the first hen to go broody. my first hen to go broody will let you lift her up to look at the eggs now it is day 6 going on day 7 and she does not get mad but our new broody we got today trys to eat us alive when we go in there to make the eggs so that we can make sure to remove the eggs that are layed that day when she leaves the box and the other hens jump in even my DH is scared to mess with her he said she is broody as broody can get and she means business and says she is very crabby
