I tried to get my Sweety this morning but he was on the watch for it

I called him when he left for work about 10 minutes ago and told him he needed to come home because a deer got into our compound around our house and the dog was chasing it around

days until hatch day! Lockdown will be Wednesday at noon, if you set on St Pat's Day at noon. Otherwise, adjust according to your set date and time. Things have been know to happen here on BYC on April 1st, so you have been warned!!!

I am looking for links to really helpful candling photos and instructions. I've looked at several and am not sure I'm reading my eggs properly. I candled on day 13 and out of 52 eggs set, I only took out two I was sure were not developing. There were some that were too dark to see into and a few I wasn't sure about.

I will probably candle again tomorrow night (day 16) and want to be sure I know what I'm doing!

This is my first hatch!

Also, when do you recommend lockdown? My day one technically started Friday night, instead of Saturday ... so my day 18 technically starts Monday night???

Thanks!

Post # 1 of this thread has excellent candling pictures

Lockdown is 3 days before hatch....if you set on a Friday night..three weeks later (Friday) is hatch day...three days before hatch day would be Tuesday night.

Good morning!!! :) Got up at 4ish, as usual and been bustling around. Did a quick candle and pulled one more shipped egg as a quitter, but the rest are still going strong...! :)

I'm enjoying all the candling reports. Am happy for the good news and sad for the bad news.

Maybe by this time next year the BYC will be having Bactrian camel and hippopotamus and gazelle Birth-a-longs in their new Exotic Backyard Animal Forum! Can't Wait! Imagine the photos and live birth cams!

Edited to make egg art quick loading.

I hope all is well with you, Mahonri.

I am confused. One of my BCM eggs seemed like it had died. I went to toss it, but decided to candle first. I can see movement in there! It doesn't seem like it's gotten any bigger or more developed, and it's obviously way farther behind my other eggs, but I could swear I saw something wiggling around. It still looks like it's 6-7 days along, even though it's 12 or so. Well, I don't have a lot of hope for a healthy chick, but I won't worry about it exploding.
My eggs are like that too, Sphinx. I have decided it is a combination of not being able to see through all my eggs very well, a not-so-perfect candling tool, and candling inexperience. I've decided to leave mine in there unless they smell, just in case. There are a few that I am sure are quitters. I need to pull them to make more hatching room, so I plan to do that Monday night. I just didn't have the heart to pull most of my shipped eggs. I did pull ONE and cracked that open this morning, and confirmed that nothing had even started in there.

DAY 15!!!

Candled my broken egg and a "porous" egg. Both seem to be good! And have a possible buyer for some chicks!

Just had my five duck eggs HATCH! First time incubating ducks and they ALL hatched! Yay! Chocolate Indian Runner ducklings and all five are doing good.

Good Morning Hatchers!

I am off to see the Blue Angels perform at the Tuscaloosa Airport today. My 89 year old father is going to try to go, too! Pray that he has a good time.

Yesterday, I gathered 14 eggs again (second day in a row, and the record for number of eggs laid in one day) and that makes the total for March 249! That's 3 eggs short of 21 dozen. Not bad for 9 hens and 10 pullets that are not all at POL yet!

My second roo is limping badly, not sure what is going on with him. I will have to check on him later this afternoon.

My #4 roo is having a hard time with the ladies. He will walk around kind of non-chalant then grab one of them with his beak and try to jump on. The hen will run in a circle until he lets go and then she chases him off. If he decides not to run from her, she will jump on him with both feet and her hackles flared! He gets that reaction from all the hens, even the pullets!

I always feel worse for the roo when they have those girl troubles than I do for the girls.

Seriously, buy a girl flowers and ask her for a date before trying for the goods, already! Sheesh!!
