Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE PRAYERS AND KIND THOUGHTS.

Things are working out...

............temp in the bator when I got home was over 101? YIKES... hope they are not dead.

Walked out the door yesterday morning before 8AM and didn't get home until after 11:15PM

Thank the good Lord for kind friends who started early to help and then for others who were able to work with us until the end.

GOOD NIGHT>

I'm a little paranoid about the temp and humidity in the bator so have one reg. thermometer and two with humidity meters on them. The two dual ones have staid at 101-98 but the other one has spiked up to 106 more than once!

So, I'm thinking as long as you were not over 101 or 106 for too long you should be ok. How hot is it under a hen? It should be about 100-106! A chicken runs as just over 106 normally. I know my bator is a still air but that just seams really weird.

I have turned my heat down very slowly over the weekend and I have it ranging now from 98-104. Based on the readings previously I should be 98-102 from my trial run.
Did my 14 day candle tonight because I had help so actually 15 days. But I also put mine in between 9 and midnight on the 17th. Better than what I first thought from the first candle.

I pulled two clear and one blood ring. The blood ring was from one I purchased and was shipped across the U.S. and the two clear were from our flock. Guess the rooster can't service 34 ladies all by himself.

So, out of 26 I'm down to 23 but after my first hatch of mostly clears this feels really good. I even had some move for me.

Now I just hope they don't hatch too early because the temp was high!

I guess I could enter the incubator into the contest, though:

/\ A huge ice chest that had seen better days, with broken latches and such. Test-fitting eggs, here.
I am planning a better egg-holder/turner design for later. Zip ties and duct tape aren't doing such a great job

/\ That used to be a small lid to reach in for goodies without opening the whole thing. Conveniently enough, I had a piece of plexiglass that fit perfectly

Those are old metal tent poles running through it for turners. Waste not, want not.

Two pc fans, a bowl for water/sponge, a tube running through the wall of the cooler with a funnel on the end for adding water without disturbing the temps.

Yes, that is, indeed, pink/yellow/orange tie-die colored duct tape

. Hey, it's for chicks, right?

Spill ... where did you get the best duct tape E-V-E-R? And it's weird to see our cooler made up into an incubator. (Yes, we have a cooler just like that with brokey hinges and mystery stain.)

You can find in several places anymore, probably... I've seen it at Home Depot-type stores, Wal-marts, Dollar Stores, TSCs and Orschelins... there's some even wilder patterns around, too!

You guys take some super awesome pictures of your chicks!! And holy cow PappaBrooder you should have entered that silkie that was looking at you sideways into the cutest baby pic contest OMG it would have won! Awesome picture taking!

x2!! I thought the exact same thing when I saw that pic!!

They are so funny. I have an EE who comes screaming out of the nest box as soon as she lays. She is running hell bent for leather as if she just laid an alien that was chasing her. Cracks me up every day!

Me too!! She flies out of the box screaming a very distinct egg song (that's less song and more scream), then immediately runs out of the coop and flies onto the top of the composter bin. I don't even have to look anymore, I just know "FatOne laid an egg" when I hear the commotion.

I always use styrofoam as the cardboard soaks up too much of the humidity.

x2... plastic or styrofoam. I don't use them for most hatches anymore, it takes up room in my small incubator, and the chicks still are able to move around and peck each other. The mess is ever so slightly less, but not worth it.

I'm forecasting CHICKS for the weekend!

I think the only time our weather is going to be similar is this weekend

The office bathroom is functional (and really nice) We still have about 2 to 3 hours of work left ... couldn't get the toilet paper hangers hung because I forgot to get screws that would go into block wall., we also have some caulking left and we need to put in some grout in a few of the tile and secure the one stand up cabinet to the wall.

Boston showed up out of the blue to help us at 8am and stuck with us till just afternoon. What an awesome friend!
Yesterday morning I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown... but he helped me through it, then another good friend and his son-in-law stuck with us till 10PM. I feel it was a miracle we got it ready to go.
I'll be ready to see a day full of patients. I have full days scheduled Mon-Thurs and then I'll get a three day weekend.(to watch chicks hatch!) I need to call the accountant to see if taxes are done.

I'm going to OWE HUGE.

In other news, I'll get high speed internet at the office on Tuesday! ... after all of these years, but we won't be connecting any of our computers that have patient data as I want to avoid all of the HIPPA garbage.

We had snow yesterday. It built up a bit and then melted. I am so ready for spring and these late snow falls are ticking me off.

Oh well that's Utah for you.
