Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Fixed my EcoGlow brooder... somehow the cord got slit and so I had to put it back together with some little wire nuts and duct tape.

It is an UNBELIEVABLE 80 degrees out there right now. My garden is really growing with all of this warm weather. I'm constantly picking broccoli. I LOVE IT. Picked some peppers too... and a tomato... ate the tomato right there in the backyard, don't want DW to know they are ripening or I'll never get to eat them! I've got to harvest some lettuce it has REALLY grown!

Tomorrow is the AZ Poultry Show at the state fairgrounds... I have to work from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM so I'll go after that.

Hope you are all having a great day too!

How are you liking it? I'm considering getting one.
Green with jealousy...it's going to be in the single digits here tonight and tomorrow.
Take your camera and get some pictures!

And I will send you something in return. Not saying it will be eggs either.

That's fine, I'll just compost it.

Humanure... ?

Countryside Organics is quality. If you are feeding the feed in the link (above), then that's a perfect base feed from my way of looking at things. It's even got yeast culture in it. I see it has fishmeal, but its position on the list isn't very high which usually is listed according to weight (descending). A little bit more of fresh meat (don't ask me how much) for increased animal protein to make the eggs healthier and reach their potential size-wise may be all that is necessary for a good breeder ration. Plus making sure it's fresh. Heuser mentions p. 413 (with backup documentation from a few studies) that soy can interfere with reproduction and hatchability in chickens, so you won't have that possible issue to deal with (if in fact it's truly a problem) since you've got soy-free feed.
That's really good to hear. I chose it because it is organic and local, but I'm glad to know that all of the supplements they include are well-advised. Animal protein will be a challenge, but I will think it out. I'll look around for a local butcher, perhaps, and ask after this 'sawdust.' Thanks again for the nutrition advice!

This is my entire crew, babies Chica, Loca and Elvis, big boys Louis and Stuart.

I have been living vicariously through you with these emus. *Sigh* I think they are so darned cute. One day, when I have the room, I will definitely have them... if I can afford to feed them.

I've had a pretty good day. There was no heat in the auditorium, so the staff meeting was delightfully short.

I had a feather-picking issue in the coop a week or so ago, but after a check today, it seems that we are back on track and all of the ladies' beards are growing in very nicely. And, having only kept chickens since the last Easter Hatch, today was the first day I was able to give little six-packs of colored eggs to a few friends at work, and they were thrilled, which felt very nice. I may start selling extras if the girls keep up as they have been. All in all, a good day.

Laree... I'm doing fantastic.. I thought I already answered this but the post didn't show up!

I hiked Squaw Peak this morning. Had a cheese omelet for breakfast. Did honey-do's,
Fixed the light in the boys bedroom, fixed one of the beds in the boys bedroom...

Still waiting for my replacement bulb for the big screen TV in my bedroom... it's suppose to come on Monday I guess.

Fed the new years day and the ground hogs day chicks. Gathered eggs... got EIGHT today... wahoo.

Hand fed some bread and some egg and cheese burritos (left overs from the school across the street) to my NYD chicks.
They practically attack me when they see me bring something into the grow out pen.

Fixed my EcoGlow brooder... somehow the cord got slit and so I had to put it back together with some little wire nuts and duct tape.

Wow Mahonri - 80 degrees! Well, thanks for giving me a little flashback to summer anyway, lol.
