Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Another thing that some say--An egg turner sets the eggs on end. Hand turning sets the egg on the side. When you remove the eggs from the egg turner and put them on their side at lock down, some chicks can't reorient their position and suffocate. To avoid this, Hatchers using egg turners use cut out card board egg cartons to leave the eggs in the same relative position as the egg turner.

I don't know about this, but it makes sense. I tried setting the eggs on their side and "wobbling" them a bit to make sure the weight of the chick in the eggs would orient the egg into the best position for hatching and such at lock down. I did have six of eight eggs hatch for my Easter Eggers.

I am going to try the egg carton tip on my next hatch. I am setting Dorking eggs this weekend

I have been giving this some thought. I always have a "rescue" and more than anything else they seem to be in the wrong position. I think it was Laree's pics that showed the chicks zipping in cartons and it got me thinking. So I'll be using this tip with the batch of silkies I just started.

Goin' to be doin' some BBQin' tomorrow......yes, it's forecast to be sunny and 50 degrees!
Spring is ready to push old man Winter out the door and I'm ready to help!!
G'night everyone!

I have a tip that I don't think very many of us think about......... WORMING OUR BIRDS!!!!!!!!!!!
I routinely feed cayenne pepper. It helps helps spur production, even in the winter when the daylight is only 3.5 hours a day, AND it has a side effect. It kills worms. And I've not detected any spiceyness in the eggs or roast chicken ;)

A BBQ sounds great! I think we are getting fresh snow tomorrow but I bet if bribed DH with some sumptuous grillerations he would be willing to fire up the monster barbie and put fire to flesh. :drool

I can't even find me, but I'm not swimming so I'm good. Thanks so much for putting me on the map.
Your welcome!

The post with instructions said you need a google account to edit the map. If you have one, you need to login.

You should be able to see your pin without having an account though.

Is that like cayenne powder? Does it effect the taste of the eggs?

Yes, it comes in powder form. I buy mine in the bulk food section of the grocery store. I mix 1 teaspoon of cayenne per 3 lbs of feed, or about a quarter cup per 40 lb bag of feed. My sawhorse feeder holds 3 or 4 bags of feed so I usually just pour cayenne in the top of a fresh bag and then it sifts together as I pour the bag into the feeder. It's not a real technical process.

And no, I've never been able to detect the taste in the eggs or the meat.

ok guys, I'm in, I didn't fill out the participation form thingi yet, because I don't know the answers to any of the questions lol, -how many eggs I'l be setting,-what breed etc. I will not know till march 16 of what kinds of eggs and stuff i'l be setting. I can't wait
