Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Heh, I wish I could, but if I did they'd have me on 'animal hoarders' in no time. Already have my coops full! I'd hatch and give them away but I don't have brooder space for two groups.. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm going to peruse the egg sellers. I want a) brown leghorns, b) easter eggers (although might have enough of those now) and c) more naked necks. Oh, and maybe Jersey giants. LOL.

Do BOTH!... it's called chicken math!

but I'll admit... I'm constantly selling and giving away chickens... spreading the joy throughout the greater Southwest!

Combine b and c ... I have some naked neck EE's that are just absolutely adorable and lay green and olive eggs.

Mahonri, Since you're here.........here's a picture of Dreki from yesterday.....

I'm in!! Just found this thread, and very excited to join!! I have two Buff Orphington's that I will set on 10 mixed breed eggs. I plan to move them to our greenhouse that evening. My chicks will just be for eating, so I'm not to worried aobut their breed. But if these buff's don't sit well I may have to invest in some silkies. This is my first year with chickens and my first year hatching. Very excited that these buff's turned broody! One is more broody than the other, but I'm hoping by putting them together with their own eggs the one that's not so broody will take a cue from the other one and sit on her own. I'm going to use old milk crates for nesting boxes. . .will they be too big? My hens like to lay in the same box in the coop. Sometimes I have three hens trying to lay at the same time in the same box!! Crazy animals.

I keep noticing that advice I give on other threads can be pasted here for everyone else, too, so here's another one.

Hint # # In preparing for the healthiest eggs possible by feeding the hens optimum food and treats, we must cut back on treats with lower nutritive value, particularly keeping protein content above 16%.

I have used canned tuna to boost protein quickly, and the birds adore it. If you can find turkey or gamebird STARTER, that tends to be around 30% protein and you can mix it with scratch 4 or 5:1 to give them something fun to eat and still have overall higher protein. This also works if you mix wild with gamebird starter- and wild bird mix has a much lower corn content, so you'll be diversifying their feed better.

You can also use black oil sunflower seeds to treat them, as it's about the right protein content. If you have a feed mill near you, ask for 5# of 'peanut pickouts' to take home and treat the flock with- this is just raw unsalted peanuts, which are exceptional for protein and amino acid profile for breeders. Much cheaper from the mill.

Gah, I so much want to do this, but I have hatchery chicks coming April 16th.. I can't do both.. hmm. I'm still pondering if I should cancel the hatchery chicks but then I can't get that nice variety. What to do, what to do. :p

You ARE in a pickle. If you can't hatch this this year, hang with us anyway, enjoy the fun, and look forward to participating next year when your girls will be giving you all the eggs you want for the hatch-a-long.

Oh, I get plenty of eggs. That's the problem, I have lots of chickens. But hatching my own eggs isn't as fun as hatching mystery eggs sent from all over the US. =)

So how many NN EE eggs will you be selling me? LOL. =)

As many as you want. My roo is an EE regular feathered so not all chicks that hatch will be NN.

I swear when I had a NN roo I couldn't give those NN chicks away. So we ate him. Now, there's demand.

Oh well, he was delicious.

Edited to add that I'm in the swap so what I'd send you would need to be a few days before or after I send for the swap.
