Chocolate is a black with a modifier gene called silver. Without knowing the fathers color square, he could produce chocolate (silver), black or red. Since the mom is red, she has to be homozygous red (black is dominate) she can produce anything. Now, if the father was homozygous silver and black all the pups would be chocolate. Muddy enough for ya??? LOL!!!

Thanks for posting this. I was driving my self batty trying to figure out the details. I had a black lab from a choc mom and a yellow dad. Just couldn't put genes to the coloring. Makes total sense now that I read your post!

I have to have surgery on my wrist in the morning. They set it completely wrong. Put details in the California thread.

Just wanted to say I can donate a dozen eggs, sent after the hatch. It will be my choice, but will probably be a mix of breeds. All pure from one or more of the following.

FBCM
SPR
Silver Phoenix
Black Sumatra
Bantam Favs
Lav AMs both LF and Bantam

Depends on what is laying at the time and could be other breeds if they are laying.

OR

2 Dozen mixed quail
A&M
Coturnix
Jumbo browns

I have Swedish Flower Hens and Chinese Langshans in the incubator now. I love the idea of having the old, old breeds, doing what they should be doing. Laying eggs and gracing the dinner table

We also are planning on a few breeds that I just plain like.

I have my Icelandics, a landrace as old as the vikings. They do a wonderful job keeping my egg basket filled and Yes Martha, they DO taste like chicken

Oh no, It's call Arielle Wins. I love my FBCM. All 4 roosters free range and have every other rooster and turkey whipped! Yet we can walk right up to them and scoop them up. So far we really, really REALLY like the marans.
