Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

That's what housedogs are for or for some people, house chickens.

There is no five second rule around here. With four large dogs in the house, anything dropped is caught in mid-air. And if for some reason they do miss something, like they were in a coma, you just point with your toe and it's GONE.

Deb

I accomplish the same thing with only two SMALL dogs in the house. They do not, however, catch anything in mid-air.

Wherever we go in the house our dogs are with us, yes, even in the bathroom! So if anything is dropped, you do not try to pick it up off the floor cuz it is already gone! We have four shih tzu/poodle mixes.

I collect a hundred bags of leaves off of the curbs in the fall so that I can dump them on the snow in the winter. They make a fabulous windbreak along the fences until I need them, and when everything melts, they keep it from getting slick. I toss millet, alfalfa, clover and grass seeds in when it's time to grow, and the litter allows some of it to hide until it sprouts so they have greens.

That's a good idea. We have oaks in the front yard and the leaves generally end up in piles up against the house anyway. I'll try to remember to save them for the chickens this fall.

Rain, Snow and Sleet! on the Oregon Coast.

You live in the area I want to move to when I retire. I love to visit Florence and Newport OR.
The most formative of my youthful years were spent living in Otter Rock, OR. Rode a school bus 9 miles each way to/from school in Newport. Florence, eh. On the other hand, Newport, Yaquina Head, Agate Beach, Beverly Beach, Otter Rock and Depoe Bay comprise the swath of Oregon Coast which draws my soul.

I'm hoping for some silkie pips this evening when I get home. I've decided to get take-out for dinner so I can get to my plowing sooner. I hope I remembered to charge my ipod... It's going to be a long night.

If I'm lucky the moose that has been frequenting our property will be elsewhere tonight. The deep snow is making them hungry, plus it's getting close to spring which makes them more aggitated. I really don't want to add "getting stomped by a moose" to my list of accomplishments. Hopefully my big dog will earn his keep and warn me if any are out there. He's not quite old enough yet to have a firm decision on moose, friend or foe. They tell me that'll come when he's about a year or so.

Back to work

We had sun today, but only 6F this morning. Up to almost 40, so some of the snow is melting.

I've just been pondering all my coop rehomings and moves - have to work tomorrow but thinking about thursday. hmm.. The Valentine's chicks are going into the barn with the NYD chicks (in a separate cage with their ecoglow) until I can pick out all the extra roos. At that time I'm hoping to rehome/sell one entire coop of various older chickens, moving the girls and a boy or two from those hatches into that coop.. and then my Easter hatch chicks can go into the barn. Whew! (there's several other options, but that's what I have for now). Chicken math! =)

Of course, this is assuming something hatches for easter! :)
