Okay, so I was just standing at the laundry sink, scrubbing out the bator, and DS#1 comes running in, carrying a flashlight and saying come quick. I shut the water off and followed him out the back door at a trot. Now, I'm not much of a trotter, but he is on the cross country team and once he hit the back door he broke into a full sprint. I called after him but he ran up the hill and into the woods. I was not sure what was going on but he kept saying to hurry, so I did. Once in the woods, he was shining the flashlight up into the trees. When he stopped, it allowed me to catch up. About that time he said, "There it is!" I looked up and there was an opposum in the top of a small tree. We stood there looking at it for a while trying to decide what to do. I asked DS if he could shoot it. He said he could if it were getting the chickens. That was about how I felt. It just didn't set well with me to just shoot it out of the tree so I went over and shook the tree. The opposom fell out and hit the ground and the chase was on! This time I was in the lead and frantically calling the dog (an elderly lab) because I didn't want it to get away and it was running straight for the chicken coop! Suddenly a black streak went past me and the dog hit the opposom broadside and it sulled. The dog picked it up and trotted over to me. He was so proud of himself! I told DS to get the live trap, and told the dog to drop it. I picked up the opposom and dropped it into the live trap. Now I can haul it off and not have to kill it and not have to worry about it either! GOOD DOG!
