Busy day yesterday. All three coops either completly cleaned or tidied as needed. Replaced horse gate (one of the girls decided the gate was a good place to scratch her butt and broke it). Replaced broken extension cord (one of the horses broke that too trying to get at the other horse's hay bag). Bunch of other smaller repair jobs. Now everything is fixed/working/replaced NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO BREAK ANYTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a beautiful process, and what an amazing result! I told my DH I wanted emus when the Sheriff got her first two and made him sit through all the videos of them zipping around the yard. But I knew I really couldn't have them here. Now you've gone and done it. I've got to sell my house...

From what I've gathered, they are really hard to sex, and your best bet is to actually send part of the egg for DNA testing.

I thought they could be sexed by the feather patterns on their heads? Something about stripes or splotches being one sex or the other? Kathy and Mary, please enlighten us.

(I just wrote a big long post and lost it. Sometimes Firefox takes me back a page when I hit backspace and I lose everything!

Okay, starting over:)

I have another big day of chicken tasks today. My little Phoenix is doing the frantic zooming and clucking around the yard to eat some morning scratch and hurry back to her (wooden) eggs. So, she'll get her first real chance to hatch this week. Yesterday, I washed out my 4x4 grow-out/brooding coop. It will be dry today, so I'll set that up and move her and her wooden eggs in tonight. If she sits tight, she'll get some of the Basque eggs that will arrive tomorrow after they have set for a day.

Let's see. I made my first saddle yesterday, and that is looking good this morning. I took out my incubator yesterday and washed that again as well. It's dry and ready to get warmed up. Woo-hoo! I love the hum of the incubator in my dining room.

I've been collecting eggs for my hatch partner in the shower. I have to package those up today after I get today's eggs and print shipping labels. It will be my first time for that. I think I'll stick one of the thermometer/hygrometers in there for a bit just to see.

I think this list-making was mostly for my benefit.

You may totally be right! I only gleaned bits and pieces from reading the Icelandic thread.

Yes, Kathy and Mary, please do.

And how do you house an emu? A little barn? Where do they sleep? Can they drink from an emu-nipple?

!!! Seramas, coturnix and button quail will be set on the 19th, 20th and 22nd. Today is your last chance to guess how many eggs will be set!! Link to the contest page is in my signature line!! Only two more hatchers needed to reach 200!

Goooood morning, hatchers. We lost an hour, last night, well... some of us *cough, Arizona, cough*

Kathy, congrats on your emus!

I'm so sorry for your loss but glad you had 21 great years together. She had such a sweet looking face, the eyes got me. I know you're nervous about adopting again, but there's plenty of older cats at shelters that need homes, when you're ready to share your life again. That's how I got my phatpants.

I've got the NYD chicks outside with the rest of the LF flock. The showgirls are braver than the speckled sussex. They're so incredibly tiny next to my ginormous girls in the flock (brahmas, RIR...) I'm worried about them. Think I'll be watching them most of the day.
