Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Thats why I couldn't find it! lol Thanks

Yeah I spent hours trying to figure it out when the format changed. All it took was one quick question to a forum, and I could have had the answer so much faster. Sometimes I just like to be thick headed.

I came home from work on Friday with what I thought was hay fever and went to bed. By Saturday morning it was a full blown cold and we had a birthday party scheduled for DS#2. Mananged to get through that but was miserable. Went back to bed with a killer headache, chest congestion and hurting, weak as a kitten and barely able to hold my head up. DH was worried (I don't get sick much) until I got up and fired up the computer. I can't get too far behind here, or I'll never get caught up! I posted this first, now I 'm going back to read the 180+ posts I've missed.

Bummer! I sure hope you feel better soon!

Tried so hard to catch up...and was planning on a trip to Lowes so I can revise my incubator before the hatch...and then my 18 mo. sliced his foot open on my metal broom that snapped in half. Ended up in the ER for about 4 hours, they decided on Glue because although the cut went into the muscle and took about 8 min. of pressure to stop the bleeding. but his skin so thin and its on his foot. Soooo...the glue didn't work and his foot split open again today and bled fairly heavy. *sigh we still will go to lowes but no walking for the little man.

And....the person hooking me up with turkey eggs fell through. I'm sad.

OMG! Your poor baby! I can't imagine trying to keep an 18 month old off a sore foot.

Serious dedication there.

OK I've changed my mind! After that I don't think I want to enter my humble artwork!

I just bought 24 eggs from an assortment at Gabbard Farms. I bought an assortment from them for my very first hatch ever, and got the absolutely coolest assortment ever. Then I didn't know what I was doing and butchered the hatch. I decided that they weren't going to hatch and they all seemed dead when I candled. So I just walked away from it and didn't bother trying to up the humidity. Day 21 hits and I walked past the bator and I hear chirping. Let me tell you I about had a heart attack and wasn't sure I was hearing peeping. Then I hatched a white empordanesa, a wheaten pendescena, a blue ameracauna, and 2 others I can't remember. That was without touching the humidity or anything at all. I sold them as week old chicks for more than I had paid to get them. I've been addicted since. And I need chickens so I'm going to back to them. I was only going to get a dozen but since I didn't get my turkey eggs I needed more. But crazypetlady is soooo generously hooking me up with dozen eggs! I am going to get some quail and I should be set. I did want local eggs to test my one incubator along the way, but no luck. :( getting sooo excited!

Good afternoon HATCHERS!

It looks like I'll be getting the sprinklers out for the garden or I won't have a garden left by next weekend.

We haven't had any rain in over 3 months. Normally there are tons of wild flowers blooming in the preserve... NONE this year.

Well, NotAFarm and Peachick have confirmed they are sending eggs.
I'm pretty sure Renee will be sending tomorrow or Tuesday... THANKS RENEE
And then I've just got to confirm with WMR..

... get out the 1588 and get both bators warmed up and set with a humidity of 30%

Still awaiting word from Ca about the sulmtaler eggs.... and a couple o' roos. I'll even take her "Fred" look a like that came out of Geoffrey's eggs.

Whew, all caught up. Good thing I love to read. Now to make everyone else read, too!

Yesterday I set my 12 turkey eggs, then went to the post office to send a money order to get me some of onagadori's pretty Yokohama eggs. Not sure if they'll be here in time for the Easter hatch, but that's not a problem. Also did some Paypal-ing for frizzle Polish eggs.

Today I ended up missing church because lots of fowl stuff was going on.
1. For starters, we were still an hour behind, having forgotten to change the clocks.

2. My currently indoor silkies tipped their water and it spilled across the entire room. As soon as Mom started mopping, one of them freaked out and knocked herself silly against the wall. Mom grabbed her and tried to calm her down, and the silkie literally passed out in her hands for a few seconds. I was worried because she has a vaulted skull, but she recovered within a few minutes and has been behaving normally all day.
3. While preparing a portion of the outdoor coop for my week-old chicks, I heard a strange crackling sound. Looked over, and one of my hens was eating an egg and more were rushing over. I ran over, GRABBED the egg (and with it a handful of poopy shavings

), ran in the house, and threw it away. After returning to the scene, I came to the conclusion that the hen didn't break the egg herself, but that one of the *three* hens crammed into the nest box above had "dropped" it over the edge and it landed right in front of her. Hopefully she didn't have enough time to see what it was she was eating.

4. I have discovered that since the rooster went to freezer camp, one of my black star hens has become a bully who terrorizes the others while they are trying to lay by standing over them, braying like a donkey, and pecking/pushing them out of the nests. She does not sit to lay after doing this. She's conditioned them to scream death threats at anyone, chicken or human, who comes within 10ft of them when they're in the nest boxes. I banished her from the coop and run for several hours while the poor girls were sitting. What a difference it made! The coop was silent but for contented cooing sounds.
5. Not particularly "fowl," but it did take a bit of time with site preparation and much cleaning of brooders - I got my chicks moved comfortably to their new outdoor home. My ducklings were moved to the bigger brooder they had occupied, making room in their old brooder for the new chicks that have begun hatching this morning. They are the last of my dearly departed (and delicious!) rooster's legacy.
