Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I took him to a vet to have him decrowed as neighbors were going to turn me in.

After I got him back, he didn't last 6 hours. Expensive mistake... but if I can get a roo from CA... I'll try a different vet. I just can't seem to live without roos!

Wait you can decroo a roo?!?!?!?!

Yes, but it is risky. Chickens do not react well to anesthesia, and will often die when put under.

Is anyone else having issues with the Click-n-Ship at USPS? I've been getting errors on the last step prior to payment for 2 days, and I even tried with a brand new account. This is really irking me.

Internal Error : We've experienced an unexpected condition.
Error Tracking Number : 1331589390404

Of course I can't get a response out of them for days...

Heads up, Everyone.

If you get an 'unexpected error' like this on Click-n-Ship, it's because you are trying to do a 'hold at the post office' while printing the label for an address that is so rural they don't allow it...for whatever reason. You can still write it on the box, but the software doesn't allow it to be a hard address label demand. I like to do them that way on the USPS site so they don't get a choice and screw the eggs up...but I'll just write it on.

Good to know sewing in the elastic will work! I wasn't sure so I didn't try. Just slips over the wing feathers ok??

Nice idea on the elastic ! LOL I don't throw underwear elastic away either, only I usually use to repair buckles on horse blankets.
It did slip over the wing, although she fussed for a bit while I did it. She wasn't hurt. I cut the elastic to the same length she recommended, and it worked out just fine.

Oh, that is Bill Murray in Caddyshack. It's a very funny movie in which Bill Murray plays a landskeeper for a golf course who goes to greater and greater lengths to get rid of a groundhog which is marring his beautiful course. It's a classic 80's comedy. From the Wikipedia summary:
"While the match has been going on, Carl Spackler has been escalating his attempts to destroy the gopher, and he has now wired much of the course with plastic explosive shaped to look like small, harmless animals. As Danny's putt hangs on the edge of the cup, Carl pushes the detonator and explosions shake the whole course."

Well I ...(I know you are all hanging on the edge of your seats)

A bra is the only solace. It must be on me. I am doing chores with a peachick in my shirt.

As you were.
How adorable! I hope it is wearing a wee diaper. Is it talking to you?

A beautiful 80+ degrees outside today. Don't tell but I skipped out on work early today to come sit outside with hubby who is always off on Monday's. And every time one of the hens runs across the yard it cracks me up.

I'm not mailing any, so can't help you BUT . . .It's obviously an OVERLOAD on the system from all of the eggs being mailed out. Blame it on Mahonri!!!

Advice needed:

As you know, I have a little broody hen. She's super serious, I believe, as she has now pulled all of the feathers out of her breast and was holding the wooden eggs under her wings when I went to move her last night. I moved her to a 4x4 coop with a run that adjoins the big coop's run. I made her a nest and moved her two wooden eggs along with her. I wanted her to settle in for a few days until some eggs arrive which I could put under her. Well, she did not sit on her wooden eggs today. She pecked around in the run, so I figured she had given it up and let her out in the afternoon to range with the others.

She made a beeline for the big coop and promptly began brooding another couple of wooden eggs.

I don't want her to brood and hatch in the regular nest boxes because I don't want eggs added to the clutch and I have a couple of hens which are a bit bully-ish and might harm chicks when hatched. I'd like to let her mother, but I don't want to do it if it's going to be hard to provide chick feed, water, protection, etc. when they hatch. I could put a dog crate in the big coop, but she might not stick to that nest either.

I had one other broody this past fall. I let her stay in the coop. She hatched out one chick and pushed him out of the nest where he chilled to death, so I'm a bit gunshy.

Recommendations?
