Yay! Wow ... I hope it's got a window. That will be quite a show to watch on Hatch Day!

I'll share a Secret ... a friend of mine ... I'll call her "Victoria," but that's not her real name ... well, she says that lots of underwear cloth wears out and tears before the elastic gives out. It's not a wealth issue. Once the cloth rips away from the elastic, all you're wearing is elastic. And then the fat lady sings.

Yep, you rock, Cayuse! BTW, your avatar reminds me of a giraffe's neck. I see it in my peripheral vision and it looks like the same pattern.... anyway.......

I have the same issue with her avatar. That fencing at an angle ... totally goofs me up out of the corner of my eye. (Cayuse, your avatar is fine, it's just hits my brain out of the corner of my eye oddly and I see something strange.)

Just got an invite from wisher1000 to join ya'll. Hoping to pick up some local eggs this week. Would love to join in if I manage to score eggs

Welcome, dixiegal62!

Anyone still reading along? I am not caught up. I have about 100 more posts to read. But I'm about to turn into a Pumpkin Hulsey and need to hit the hay so that I can get up with the chickens.

Tomorrow:

1) Feed chickens some canned salmon so that they can make some healthy eggs for Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Hatch-a-long! And today's scorched oatmeal and raisins, but that really make a difference for hatching.

B) Try to decide which of two roosters has a better chance of being fertile and/or has more hens that like him and accept his amorous advances because eggs from those hens are the ones I should set for Mahonri's 3rd Annual BYC Hatch-a-long!

not a good day, contemplating going to the ER. If you believe in prayer, pray for me.
I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. Trust your first thought. It is statistically more often correct.

If your best friend were in your position, what would you tell them to do?

Hoping you have a better day tomorrow.

(I am trying not to be alarmed.)

That was my thought too. Well, I guess it's time to find some replacements...... Come on girls lets get to laying..... Hopefully the pepper trick will work, I noticed one of my hen bunkering down in one of the boxes earlier, so maybe she is getting ready...

Well? Did it work?

I'm setting my turkey eggs tonight! 'm really excited, I've never had a turkey (except maybe in my freezer waiting for Thanksgiving Day LOL). Thank you AKAMichelle!

Happy Hatching!

AK Michelle, are you vacationing in the sunny South? I see (on the map) you are not far from me. Stop in for coffee if you don't have to hurry back.......

And Lady Chickadee, cruising off the coast of Virginia Beach? Ya'll are just jet setters, aren't you!

Why yes, yes I am. See the north ran out of coffee and you know what they say about southern hospitality

Um, is there an update to this?

I call them Rockshires.

(Barred Rock and New Hampshires). That variety is Buff Barred. I also have Buff Columbian.

They are some of the F2s from my Delaware Project. I only got 6 out of 200 196 eggs hatched, and they are all female. I am thinking.... sex linked.

I am going to cross them back to their daddy, to get another dose of barring, and get some males....... anyway, I hope this works.

Advice needed:

As you know, I have a little broody hen. She's super serious, I believe, as she has now pulled all of the feathers out of her breast and was holding the wooden eggs under her wings when I went to move her last night. I moved her to a 4x4 coop with a run that adjoins the big coop's run. I made her a nest and moved her two wooden eggs along with her. I wanted her to settle in for a few days until some eggs arrive which I could put under her. Well, she did not sit on her wooden eggs today. She pecked around in the run, so I figured she had given it up and let her out in the afternoon to range with the others.

She made a beeline for the big coop and promptly began brooding another couple of wooden eggs.

I don't want her to brood and hatch in the regular nest boxes because I don't want eggs added to the clutch and I have a couple of hens which are a bit bully-ish and might harm chicks when hatched. I'd like to let her mother, but I don't want to do it if it's going to be hard to provide chick feed, water, protection, etc. when they hatch. I could put a dog crate in the big coop, but she might not stick to that nest either.

I had one other broody this past fall. I let her stay in the coop. She hatched out one chick and pushed him out of the nest where he chilled to death, so I'm a bit gunshy.

Recommendations?

here is what i do........ i leave the hen in the coop nest box and I mark the eggs that I want her to hatch. and I take the eggs out that are not to hatch out every day. then two days before they hatch, I put a pecse of fencing over the opening to keep the chicks in the box, the hen will stay in the box one to two days before the hatch to keep them warm.

There are sooooo many folks on here that ought to be thrilled I haven't their post addresses...it could be so much FUN!!

I would *so* love to have a pair of emu... My back yard has 4 foot tall horse fence which could easily be extended a few feet. Can't you just imagine the squall from the gas meter reader as he slowly turns to look at a bird as tall as he is, that sounds like a conga band and looks like something from "Land of the Lost!

AHAHAHAHAHA THANKS FOR THE SITE YOU GAVE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOT LOOKING, NOT LOOKING @&%$#@ I LOOKED!!!!!!!!!!! "sighs" someday, someday.......................

SCG- what is up with the sign? What kind of coop are you running?

I put that sign up last year when I had 9 nesting box holes, 7 of which were filled with angry broodies, trying to steal eggs and nests and causing hate and discontent. I had so many broodies that the fat girls were squeezing into the small nesting boxes on top (12x12) and some were even on the floor under the nesting boxes.

If you contemplate it, you should go. Hope everything's ok. Will be thinking of you.

Kathy... LOVE the emu pictures and the panic of the chick. That's probably how the meter reader would appear going back over the fence once the spotted the emu (or they spotted him?).

Good morning all.
Mahonri, please let us know how you are doing. Saying lots of prayers for you and keeping
fl.gif
that everything is OK. I hope you took the advice from everyone here and went to get whatever is wrong checked out at the emergency room.
