Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

My internet service went down. . .. .and I missed 300 posts! . THat's 30 pages!!!

Incubator temps started rising. Hope I did n't cook them. I feel like throwing them all out and starting again. We are having crazy weather: 60-70's during the day and drop to the low40's at night. Not normal for here. Messes with my LG.

Well, now that I think about it I do have another incubator!! I'll start collecting today.

Glad you're back up on the internet. I have more than once wanted to throw my styrobators out the window. After ruining at least 3 hatches that I can think of off the top of my head over the years, it goofed up its last hatch this spring. Yes, I am tempted to make a cooler out of my recently retired styrobator. (just a little joke)

I actually learned a whole lot about incubating with an LG the first few times. Gave me the confidence to build one!! I much prefer a set it and for get it style but I need to challenge my OCD ways!! I had the LG stabilized for days, loaded the eggs, and by 28 hours it was not up to temp. Maybe I needed to give it more time. I think I turned it too much. It has a cold spot too, so I will keep moving the eggs around. I figure it keeps me on my toes and helps me to understand how a very good incubator is made.

A Policeman came to talk to our dept. once and said not having a camera or one that doesn't work when you say there is one could make you liable if something happens and there is no camera.

Definitely do not do anything that would make you liable for others actions. You could call the local police and ask if that would be OK and if it would make you liable for anything.

Ron-- do you think that applies to just watching egg stealers?? What's this world coming to. THe crooks have more rights than the honest folks. I'm getting ripped off, it's my egg money to buy feed. All very frustrating . THe good customers will be inconvenienced. Well, I guess, it's time to clean up the parking lot. And recheck my insurance.

Honestly, thank you for the reality check.

That was definitely not normal hawk behavior; even when hunting to feed their babies, they kill then fly it back to the nest before going out for more. The game wardens will probably test him for disease before releasing him back into the wild, just in case. Your hens might not lay well the next couple weeks, either. After a dog burst into a couple of my pens a few weeks ago, the hens nearby stopped laying and are just now getting back to egg production. (The dog was dispatched shortly after the attack.) You don't look like hellooo in the pics; you look like Momma Thundercloud about to strike. Mr. Hawk better consider himself lucky not to die on the spot!

well these babies are all juvies! So none are laying anyhow so thats no problem.....splenda is fine it seems and she is back in the house liking the attention. Princess seems like she is at least holding her own...no inflamation, no swelling..but I could SEE her lung so im feeling pretty cautious...I am giving princess a lot of supportive care(vitamins and stuff) but am thinking she needs penicillin does anyone know if she can have the kind for horses? (I used to work with a vet guess thats why I am pretty comfortable doing my own shots and proceedures) but I dont know that stuff...anybody???HAHAHAHA Momma Thunder Cloud!!! and we have dogs too I WILL shoot them!! WIFF my beebee gun! I dont have any other kind of gun...I NEED to fix that

Yes, it is sad. Especially when you get in trouble when a crime that has nothing to do with you is committed.

Do check your local laws. California is a weird State so you may be ok with a Dummy camera where you are.

Good luck with getting money for your eggs. I am still working on that here. I have a couple of steady customers, but I only have 11 laying hens now. Of course I have a lot of chicks and hatching egg right now. 6 SG Dorkings from Emma at Poultry Place are in lockdown now.

Bye,

Thank you ChestnutRidge for posting those candling pics! I've never looked at my eggs this early, but your pic inspired me to take a peek at one of my eggs and I saw the spot and some tiny veining. However, it floated around as I rotated the egg. Is that normal? All these eggs were shipped.

leave it alone. The humidity will go down. When it does, do not add water. Watch the air cells and make sure they are evaporating correctly. I think there is a link to proper air cell size by day in the tips section.

So, if in day 7 it is not in the correct place, add water, but use a sponge or a small tub. I would start with a small one like the bottom of the plastic easter eggs if you need to add humidity.

I suspect the air cells will be fine.

Good hatch
Well. I didn't see this. And I ended up taking all the water out of the middle and leaving some in the two side slots. And my humidity went down to 41. It's back up to 43. :( it was so stressful doing that! I made my dad(who helped me) sterilize, not touch anything, listen to everything I say. Lol. I know Im being too over the top, I just want to get this right. And of course I candled three of them! :) de humidifier was run for mabye a half hour. I hope I didn't screw anything up.
