KathyinMO posted a pic from The Warden from some time back and nearly killed me with coffee in my nose.

Oh geez. What else can I say. I'm just so sorry.
She'd have been 2 this April. She was laying regular up to being broody. She was "broody" for about 3-4 days (walking around puffed up and clucking) before she finally sat on the nest, so I knew it was coming. She's not thin or bony at all... She was warm when I took her off the nest today. I've flashlighted her the best I can without disturbing her dying, and I don't see any wounds or lice/mites.
Her entire body is cold right now, even though the house is 75 and I'm right next to the wood stove (that's on). Her breathing is shallow, her head is hanging down off my lap and her comb is now purple.
She has no power to move her body at all.

Oh well. It stinks and I care for her, but she wasn't one of my favorite hens, although seeing her puffed up and broody always made me laugh. I'd have a mental breakdown if my favorite hen died, so I consider it lucky that it was Black Betty.

Hey I was wondering.......

I have my SPPR pullet Rockette in the house. A few months ago, she had caught her foot in the top of a brooder on the porch. It was late, I had just gotten home and was out putting birds away. Suddenly she fluttered or I doubt I would have seen her hanging there. I broke her in, got her back in shape and she's been out with the main flock till just 3 a few days ago.

I was out with the rabbits and I hear Rockette screaming. I have a little bantam Wellie roo out there and he had mounted. I tossed something that direction and he took off. She started to get up and my BBS AM roo got to her. Before I could get across the yard, my FBCM roo decided to get into with the AM roo and they fought on top of her. My poor girl isn't standing yet. She falls to one side, looks weak, but she eats and drinks and even sings the egg song when she hears the others. I'm sure she'll mend again, but I'm still upset.

Anyway, could something similar have happened? Maybe she has an injury that you can't see??

I have Rockette in a toaster box. It keeps her upright and helps her legs not turn out. I did the same thing when she had been caught and she healed so well you never would have known. If she has too much room she spreads out and I want to make sure she has the best chance of getting well.

Maybe, and I contemplated that too. My roo is a little jerkwad sometimes. He chases women. He'll be getting his, soon, regardless of whether he participated in Black Betty's demise or not.

Poor Rockette sticks with her buddy Fat Chick all the time. Last time she was hurt though it took weeks for them to figure out they were buddies again. She by rights should be in the SPPR pen, but nothing I've done has made my other hens leave her alone. These roos are usually very gentle, but the AM is just learing his stuff works, so to excited. The FBCM roo was going to her rescue, but he pounced the AM right on top of her. MEN!

That sounds like a heart defect. If she's having low oxygen...well, it's common with hatchery stock. Is she from a hatchery? I experienced this with 2 and had necropsies done, and then I knew with the next one. I haven't any more hatchery stock an haven't ever had any live more than 3 years. I'm so sorry!

Yes, she is from my hatchery stock biddies.
I've had non-hatchery stock biddies die pretty quickly too, one had an egg break inside her and died of the infection in a few days. She went downhill really fast, but at least I knew she was sick. My biggest issue with this is she didn't appear sick and now she's pretty much dead 3 hours later. I'm curious.
One of the mysteries of life, like Dar's noises last night!

That's cute.. I think I want one of this mug...Will be dropping hints to kids that there's a cute mom mug out there. Or, probably could get this on a T~shirt. Pretty cute, I just counted the chicks, I have just that many kids too! Hey!
