Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

HA! No, the chickenstock I am referring to is in New Hampshire. The part of NH that is very far away from Maine (a good 4 hour drive). Hosted by aceschix, who has light Brahmas, Ameraucanas, Marans, - all things I am interested in.

I got Brahma eggs from her last year. I love the Brahmas.

ETA - Just realized that the "blonde" chicks in my avatar are the light Brahmas that I hatched out last year from her eggs.

I've totally missed out on this year's thread, I must say. I've not been online, I have been avoiding my incubator. After finding 24 of 24 eggs had detatched cells, I have only really checked for signs of life twice and now am still not really expecting anything to hatch after the disaster that befell them at the hands of the post office. Plus, my health is't too good and I'm just trying to stay awake all day at the moment. So, wish me luck, I set them at noon my local time (GMT) on Sat March 17th, and have a few banty sized eggs in there, so may have something happening from Thursday pm onwards. Sad, sad hatch.

I haven't been a good girl with the turning (tilting with a Brinsea), so I may have a poor hatch. But usually I am good. And I'm not sure that it's all doom, doom, doom if you let them go 12 hours on the week ends. Let's hope not because I'm sure I've let it go that long at least twice and maybe more.

I forget how often the instructions indicate that I'm supposed to do it. I usually try for three times a day, but I will often just turn/tilt it when I happen to see the incubator. Kind of like, "Oh, yeah, I'm incubating. I guess I should tilt the incubator." Anybody remember what the instructions say? I know ... I probably should have asked that on day 1 rather than around day 16.

When I first got the incubator, I tried for every 3 hours (except at night) which was more than was required.

I think turning is more difficult with a Little Giant, right? Do you have to open the lid and turn each egg by hand? If so, I can see why you would be wanting a turner.

I think I have read that 3 times a day is sufficient. I am home all day usually and try to turn about every four hours (5 am, 9 am, 1 pm, 5 pm, 9 pm). But I don't stress if I miss a time because I forget or am not home. I doubt a hen sticks to a turning schedule!

I do use cartons. No, actually I bought plastic egg flats. I put them in the dishwasher between uses. They are cheap.... like $1.29 or something. I bought several of them and cut them up to fill a HovaBator. (holds 81)

Kathy, I have some of these that I use when incubating but I have never hatched in them because I was afraid the chicks would get hung up in the holes. Have you hatched in these? Had any problems with chicks getting stuck? I'd love to use them if they work for hatching. I bought mine on eBay pretty inexpensively.

Well I put my eggs into lockdown. I candled a few and then I couldn't take it anymore. They look like they haven't changed since day 14, the day after my incubator was shut off all day. So bummed. I don't think any or gonna hatch. I just put them into lockdown and am hoping for the best. I don't want to look at anymore. Super sad. everyone was so encouraging, but I just haven't seen any movement. The few I looked at weren't at all like last time I hatched when it was clear that there was life inside... there's a sliver of hope, but it's very small.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

My new flashlight is awesome! I can see into every single egg in my incubator

It's a bitter sweet victory, there is zero doubt about the eggs now. 6 Marans didn't develop, and 2 more AM and 1 Icelandic were all eliminated

But now I know the remaining 64 were alive and kickin yesterday

Are we all prepped and ready for final candle and lockdown/confinement?

The following change has been made to Post #1.
__________________________

PLEASE REPORT THE NUMBER OF CHICKS YOU HATCHED ----> HERE (LINK WILL SOON BE ADDED) THIS NUMBER NEEDS TO BE REPORTED BY APRIL 11TH, 2012 AT 11:59:59 "Mahonri time" MST.

This will help us determine both small and large hatch rates and who will win the Brinsea Incubator.

Remember, to be eligible for the hatch rate contests, you should have posted a pic of your incubator when you set your eggs, showing the number set in this thread and then when you are done, you'll post a pic of the live chicks you hatched when your hatch is finished.

Have an awesome day everyone!

This is worth the listen. As a youth, I grew up listening to Paul Harvey!

During my college years, I rarely missed his noon broadcast.

He was truly a visionary who could, through the wisdom of the ages, predict the future.

47 years ago today, he predicted our future. SCARY!

Click this link------>PAUL HARVEY! APRIL 3rd, 1965

Take a careful listen. GOOD DAY!
