Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Quote:
I hatch in them, and have not had a problem.

My broody is done hatching. She left the nest with one egg pipped, to care for her 5 chicks. The egg was cold and the little yellow-buffish chick was dead. The five look great though.

Happy Mommy!!!!

I found a hidden broody who has determinedly sat upon some ill advised eggs (God knows where she found them, as I didn't leave them nor give them to her, so they're OLD!) and one weeped and stuck to her tummy...really a bad deal.

I'm going to have to bathe her, candle the rest of the eggs, and slip some Easter Hatch eggs under her. Maybe A LOT!!!

Well, it's Day 16, and there's not much to see here, folks. It's getting so dark in there that there is little difference to see day-to-day. I'm going to stop candling at lockdown, so Day 18 will be the last one.

ETA: I just locked down my Thursday-set eggs and I am exhausted. I usually use cardboard cartons, which have never gotten damp or soggy for me, but my hand got so tired from cutting that I switched to plastic. Well, that didn't go much more smoothly, and I literally spent a little over an hour cutting.
My hand hurts.

I need to find those awesome egg wash trays!
I also caved an got a second incubator. So, I've been trying to get the 2nd incubator - a new-style Genesis to go with my old-style Genesis which I love - up to temp and humidity. Well, my Brinsea Spot Check, which worked perfectly for me last year, disagrees with my 3 other thermometers, so I haven't been using it this year. So, I've been moving around water, turners, thermometers, my one hygrometer, measuring differences, etc. Sigh. I want my chicks already!

Note to self: Do not set on Thursday ever again. Monday is not suitable for lockdown frenzy.

I'm going to bed.

Missed two days of this thread to visit family and it took more than three days for me to catch up! Love all the great pics and ideas.

Is this normal?

I just had to throw out my 3rd stinker. All BC Marans from the same source. If it was you, would you contact the seller or wait and see it any have developed and then contact? Or just keep my mouth shut and chalk it up to shipped eggs. They are dark beautiful eggs and I can't see what is going on. I think there are at least 2 that are developing.

The other breed she sent, I have 4/14 that I think is still developing. No stinkers in that bunch.

Thanks for any and all advice

I have read folks that say they have successfully incubated and hatched old eggs. I find that a rare thing, actually. Old eggs become stinkers in my experience, and I just won't chance it. An exploding egg can ruin an entire incubator full. Old eggs PLUS shipped eggs = alot of stink (in my opinion).

Sherrie I would chalk it up to shipping issues. So hard to tell what happens to them once they are out of your hands. IMO I would probably not purchase from the same seller again, just because of my suspicions but I certainly would not bad mouth them. (not saying that you are in any way)

I've even been known to "coo" to the bator when a chick is slowing down. Trying to sound like an encouraging momma hen. DH looks at me like I'm losing my mind when I do this!
lol.png

My DH seems indifferent to the hatching process but he is always the first to hear them. I've caught him cheepcheepcheeping at the incubator when he thinks I'm not looking

X2 - I guess the only time I would question the seller's product is if they all showed up clear. If they developed at all, then they have done all they can do without hand delivering them.

CRAP! I candled and look what that got me! ALMOST NO IOWA BLUES! Kari! Only two are developing well and about 5 just quit!the others were clear
he.gif
shipping was horrid though... ALL the Am/iowas X's are good! didnt pull ANY of those BUt lost my jersey giant!
hit.gif
... ALL my Blue AM's are great! all my fluffy project eggs are good!! Line A's, line Bs, ABs! Lost a few (several) of John's barred rocks and a few bcm...so I think out of 192 eggs we lost about 40 or so with a couple more iffy ones put back in to "See". So that was my candling report for a couple days ago...I had only candled a few for the 10 day since with this sportsman it is hard to candle all those trays of eggs and not cool off the whole thing and we record all developement with eggs and hatching so we can keep track of everything with so many lol....so it is logged...it recovers pretty fast though...which is awesome!
Still looks like I am going to need SEVERAL hatchers....!
lol.png
OMG the BEST news is that we ordered some polish eggs from illia....Well the foam shippers she used to ship the eggs took a beating on the way, THANKS PO!! and several where lost! ANYHOW I HAD 10 eggs not broken, but some had kinda iffy air cells...wonky...I put them in the incubator for about a day no turning maybe a bit longer with no turner on just sitting upright in the racks...THEN gave ALL ten to a new broody...who is deadly serious about hatching SOMETHING! SHE is an EE...and she took ALL ten after a moments pause and a worried look almost to say "ok well I will TRY,but I dunno"
What I had done was put them in the nest when I took her off to do her morning "thing" when she came back ready to sit there they were! And still warm! she thought another hen added some I guess she hopped right on and had to work to get ten polish eggs covered but is doing a great job since EVERY ONE is developing and shows movement on candling!!
ya.gif
SO THAT is awesome...I didn't count those eggs in the hatch along as they got going a few days later! one of the polish is a CREOLE hope it hatches!
fl.gif
AND WE still have TWO developing Iowa Blues!!!

Kari can I get some Jersy giants? That was SOOO disapointing,I was surprised I was that upset SOOO must have more...just a few.Maybe some iowas?
hmm.png
Ugg, that's a real shame about the IaBs, they really don't ship well
hmm.png
I have only pulled 1 quiter out of the ones I set. You will love they Iowacanas though, they are super hawk fighters! Great free ranges and great layers - if you can find their eggs, that is.
My IaB flock isn't laying very well, I have 2 broodys and am only getting about 3 eggs a day from the other 5. On the bright side the NYD pullets should start laying in May-June and they are much nicer birds! My Jerseys are fun but if you want some good ones mine might not be the stock to get them from. I know they are slow growing birds, but at 10 months they aren't as big as I think they should be. I need to find a place to separate them again too, since I promised some to a local guy as well. Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear, but if you're patient I can hook you up!

Good morning all!

Sorry for all your loss, Congrats on your findings, art, hatchings, and some others that I forget.

I have missed more then a week worth of post, and had to skip over 1000 posts! My Aunt had died two Fridays ago, and that was the reason for me not to keep up.

I am down to 49 eggs out of 66 eggs set. Most of the ones that I pitched were clear and had blood rings. I will be locking down on Thursday as I had set the eggs on Sunday.

Have a great day ya'll. :frow
