Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

3 pipped! Finally, one is a Wheaten Ameraucana..I want all 6 to make it. I have 20 eggs, so, not that many compared to some on here! The rest are Araucanas..I do have some Exchequer in, but they are not to be counted in the contest. I only have 5, really really want them to hatch.

So the first three out are all fluffed up and looking nice... #4, The last one out (a dark colored Icelandic, which was also the first one to pip) is all SLIMEY.... If he dries he's gonna look like slick goo.

2 sulmtalers and another Icelandic in the 1588 are pipped. (I thought one was one of Renee's... but nope, it was a sulmtaler)... I thought I had put all of them in the Brinsea, now I have to go look the eggs over in the brinsea again.

None in the Brinsea are pipped. I think they'll probably hatch out late Friday or Saturday night as I feel fairly certain that the temp there was right at 99.5 since I set them.

I am SO TIRED... I went up the mountain for an hour hike after work.... went to take a swim, but it was WAY TOO COLD, DW is off to youth night with #4 & #5 and #6 and #7 will be staying home with me... (they've been watching the hovabator) I'm telling them to lock the doors and not to answer them or answer the phone because I'm feeling SLEEPY.

I just noticed that our parakeet pair start making noise every time they hear the chicks chirping... funny.

19 standard and 11 bantam chicken eggs made it to lockdown this morning early, good thing too i have 2 internal pipers peeping at me when i walk in the room, one of each so far! on Lockdown too! WOW! I placed them at noon sharp on the 17th.
it's getting MORE EGGsiting!

How do you know if they are internally pipped? I imagine candling to see is a no no after lock down :)

You CAN see the chicks shadow in the air sac when they are internally pipped. No....don't candle during lock down and yes, you will hear them cheeping.

1 chick out 6-7 more pips from an assortment of eggs, I will more have chicks tomorrow.

My first chick out is a Porcelain D'Uccle from happyhensny.

Has anyone tried hatching/incubating with a more natural medium. Like shavings or straw? It seems so rough how they just roll around in there. I'm sure you'd have to adjust the humidity but there would be air flow.

Also, I am locking down my quail eggs right now and I candled them but I don't see anything. Never have. Its just kinda of a glowy green with brown spots on it. Should you see anything? I'm going to be mad if NONE of all my quail don't hatch. But they look the same as the did when I candled in the beginning. I have them spread out through 3 incubators and all looks the same.

I had family who as at home lock ours down yesterday, since I hadn't planned to be home from work today - even though it turned out I was (long, unpleasant story, don't ask), and will be the rest of the week. I left all 12 in although I think one is a quitter (from last candling). Not too good at candling yet, so it stayed.
So... now we wait.

Am hoping for a few fuzzybutts out of this, my 2nd hatch. The first one was a complete bust due to a few horrible temperature fluctuations... it seems I picked a bad room to set the incubator up in! So I sooo badly want this one to work out!

We need a "pacing nervously" smiley!
