You all are making me soooo envious! I want pips and cheeps and zips and chicks!
Maybe because you hatched 30 chicks.BUSY morning. Niece from Panguitch and family came by to visit. We bought the kids Mickey Dees and took the parents to Chilis.
In other news. THIRTY CHICKS hatched, 6 eggs opened and removed(late quitters in the Hovabator) 5 eggs remain in the Brinsea... and another Peachick Am has pipped!
Hovabator is cleaned and stored... why would I store it rather than chuck it. BEAT'S ME?!?!?

It can also be from inbreeding depression or poor breeder diet. Damerow's Chicken Health Handbook says it can be from low humidity during incubation, cold brooder floor, wire floors, zinc deficiency, but mostly hereditary.
She also says that there is a "curled-toe paralysis caused by riboflavin deficiency. In the former condition [of crooked toes], toes twist to the side but the chick can still walk fine. In curled-toe paralysis, the toes curl under, causing the chick to walk on the tops of its toes. Because walking is difficult, the chick spends a lot of time resting on its hocks. Curled-toe paralysis can occur where breeder hens are fed unsupplemented lay ration."
