Small Batch Best Hatch Rate
This contest is for those hatching less than 24 eggs - we don't want to punish those who have not caught the Big Batch Fever yet!
Hatch contestants may set up to 23 eggs. Post a picture on set day showing the number of eggs you have set and also fill out the hatching spreadsheet with that amount. These eggs may be under a broody or in an incubator. You must post your picture and your number in the spreadsheet by Monday, March 19th to be entered in the contest. When the hatch is over, post one picture showing clearly the number of chicks you hatched and fill out the spreadsheet. You must have your pictures and spreadsheet filled out by 3 days after hatch date. Best hatch rate wins! In the event of a tie, the winner will be chosen by random drawing.
Prize: a 6 month GFM
WINNER: SChunn
17. Best Hatch Rate
For this contest during this hatch, participants will need to be setting a minimum of 24 eggs, with confirmation picture posted to this thread on set day. These can be under a couple of broodies or in your incubators. Tell us how many you will have cooking and then don't go back and edit your post where you tell us how many eggs you start with. We'll need that info by Monday the 19th of March at latest to be included in the contest. When the hatch is over, you'll take a pic and post it to show us how many you actually got...the picture must be of sufficient quality to count all the chicks. In the event of a tie, the one who hatches the most chicks wins.
Prize: a 6 month GFM!

Thanks all, for the mite info!
SCG, - how long do you avoid eating the eggs after treatment?

I'm thinking of doing the injectable (water based) ivermectin in their water. the site with that info says they eat the eggs even while treating, but I don't think I want to. I don't know how long to wait, though.

I had some really late hatchers but I'm not counting them in my number. I had 4 cochin hatch Wed and another yesterday. I'm guessing their shelf wasn't warm enough.

I used to save the eggs for 14 days and blow them out. Until I got overrun with eggs. Then I read the package insert on human ivermectin and the half life of that is 18 hours. It takes 5 half lives to get out of the body (Aren't you glad I'm a pharmacist?). So 5 x 18 hrs is 90 hrs = ~4 days. So I blow the eggs out for 4 days, throw the contents, then I start eating the eggs after that. I don't sell eggs to anyone until 14 days after, because that's what's "recommended" and chickens are not humans so it could be less or more... but I've eaten ivermectin eggs a couple times with no ill effects.

Small batch closed on Tuesday, regular best hatch on Monday. Sorry...

I screwed up the quote thing, so I think its Jesshan8 that served? Thank you for your service. I don't give my husband a hard time, I just give him a list of things to tell his chief. Things like, when the kids are sick tell him I'm bringing them to his house. Since we haven't been able to fix the basement since you're always gone, tell Chief to bring a couple of guys and I expect it done in a day. Tell chief, the next time I have a doctors appointment, I'll drop the kids with him at the command. Things like that. LOL I'm an army veteran and I have to say it was much easier than being a military spouse!

Its hard to not be disappointed, especially with the fact the has to pack and get ready but won't know til tonight or tomorrow if he leaves this sunday. Thats rough. But there is bright, sweet kid who was at the last command with us and followed us here. He's a true asset to the Navy and their field. But the Navy is downsizing certain jobs and he was once a passenger of a DD who got a DUI...and so he himself got in trouble. So over two years later because of the little trouble on his record, he has to reclass or get out of the Navy. His command said it wasn't going to happen and he was going to leave on Sunday. Then yesterday they said he 2 days to find another job and reclass, so if he doesn't get it done and approved by tonight, my husband goes in his place. I feel bad for DH and myself, but I feel worse for this kid. But, he does come over for korean style dinner tonight and he's happy. LOL He eats junkfood because he doesn't know how to cook, so when he comes over here, I make enough food for about 8 people, and he'll eat almost all of it.

Onto happier things, when I got home from out movie date, it was really late and the kids were really grumpy. DS slept a little at my friends house, so it gave him just enough energy to be incredibly difficult to put to sleep. So I fell asleep. Without feeding, watering the chickies and checking on my veiny friend in the egg. I woke up this morning to DH having fed and watered my chicks (even though he claimes he hates them) and perfect little miracle chick that hatched sometime between last night and today. Talk about Late hatcher!!!

Mine were late for the Easter hatch, but more or less on time (I lack comprehension skills, and thought everyone was setting Sunday, so my tuesday set wouldn't be so bad). I ended up having 6/7 hatch, but only 5 had hatched by the midnight deadline, so that's my official spreadsheet tally.

I'm glad you got some late surprises though, that's awesome.

Thanks for all the info on mites, Ron!
I posted in the emergency/disease section and couldn't get a response. I've been poring over so much information. It looks like I will be spending my vacation cleaning the coop and treating the birds.

We are torn as to what to use. Frontline is systemic, and since it is not officially approved for poultry, I worry about eating the eggs.

Inject able ivermectin in the water would be easy, but it is odd that they say you can't eat the meat, but eggs are fine. I guess I could feed the eggs back to them for a week.

Pyrethrum spray seems the most harmless, but I'm concerned I won't be able to get a thorough application on each chicken.

And there is Adam's tick and flea dip. Dipping and drying 28 birds also seems a little overwhelming.

I do want to get this under control soon, and at the same time, wonder if the mites have anything to do with my sick hen, or if she has something else going on. She doesn't look so great this morning. Last night she was perking up. We'll be off to buy some kind of mite treatment tonight.

Sorry about your dead chick, Mahonri!
I read reports on frontline--it stays in the oil glands an was not found in the eggs. 1% was found in the meat. It also does not get into breast milk of mother dogs.

You should be able to eat the eggs but not the meat.

I would put the Dog frontline on the sick one or two. If you are worried about the eggs, don't eat the eggs from the treated ones for 25 to 30 days. Keep them separated. Then I would do the cleaning and treating of the coop. DE is great as a preventative, so keep using it regularly on the roosts and nest boxes. If you do all of this, you will get rid of the mites quickly. If you don't you will fight them for months or more.

Ivermectin is the same thing humans are given by doctors to treat round worms. It won't hurt you either. I treat with it and eat the eggs and I still only have two eyes

Get the die no mite strips.

Good luck!

Ron
