Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Friday the thirteenth should have been called friday thirteenth WEEK. Let me see...where should I start? OH I know... Me and Nina come in from doing farm chores and the house was on FIRE. Needless to say we survived and didnt burn up...I put out the fire by the time the Fire Dept came. IT was electical in nature and nearly burnt my gorgeous Master bath up! Been dealing with insurance companies,trailer company all that CRAP! ALSO interenet was out for over two weeks and have missed EVERYTHING here! now it is over....sigh.
just hatched out ten babies, from 10 eggs we bought for her from illia!.we gave her ten wonky aircells and all...she developed them ALL and hatched them ALL! for a cool 100% fertility for illia and 100% hatch rate for broody on SHIPPED eggs. I also hatched 120 eggs for the easter hatch-along, now I have 35 chicks I need to sell...I just sold five chicks this past week...and sold 25 chicks the week before. They are so cute!
Today we put the wire up on the fence in the horse paddock...(we are turning it into a chicken run/outside yard. We have made the stall in the paddock into a chicken coop to house the Ameraucanas...they will be our "show" chickens... Scout is driving me nuts he is our blue healer...he keeps trying to bite the donkey's through the fence. The donkeys hate HATE dogs anyhow and he isnt helping, Ellie Mae tried to kill penny another of my dogs (the best dog in the world) a few days ago and she almost didnt get away...she is a great farm dog and thank GOD she was fast enough. We have some respritory crap going around in the chicken pens...so I am giving shots ALOT...ugh. I have almost used a WHOLE bottle of Tylan50 which is ALOT. But have at least 8 chicken pens and that is not counting brooders (baby nurserys for chicks). I guess we have about 200 so far...5 horses....3 donkeys....4 dogs... 4 cats.... a saltwater fish tank... OH AND A BRAND NEW DODGE RAM!!! WOOT! The ONLY good thing all week. OH WAIT We bought that LAST week!

Friday the 13th was my birthday, so it was a good day for me! Fire is scary! So glad you did not lose the house and no one was hurt. We dusted all of our birds yesterday for mites, and discovered some had lice, too. It's going to be a long battle. Congratulations on your hatch!

That is a lot to go through. I can imagine one of the biggest things right now, is getting that upper respiratory taken care of in your chickens. Keep at it, it will come, healthy chickens again. Aren't you the one that had that huge hawk go inside of your coop and get your babies? Or was that someone else? My goodness! I'll bet you are tired of all the drama that life can throw at us. Have to say, sounds like you have a pretty good attitude though, you were able to see the good through the bad when you mentioned all of those cute baby chicks you were able to hatch! Good for you. Best way to get through the hard times, with half a smile? lol.. Well, keep on a chuggin. Rootin for ya!
I can share in your good news, and at least relate to the good part. We also got a new truck..new to us..a Dodge Dakota. My husband is pretty happy. Wish we could have a new RAM! Those are great! Sounds like you need a nice big truck for all of the animal and farm work you have to keep up with. Hoping we hear when your chickens are all sounding healthy again. That can be such a hard thing to go through. Sooo glad that fire didn't do any more damage than it did! And that you all are ok!

OK I have the hatching BUG NOW !!! so I have a Q. does anyone here want to do a mother's day hatch-a-long with me?? you know to honor all the mother's everywhere!!!!! if so, let me know and I will set up a thread for it! the set eggs date will be APRIL 22, 2012 also known as Earth Day! or the 21st if you guys want that date instead and you can have any kind of eggs!

I can do that, I am still waiting for shipped eggs I bought last october, maybe those hens will cooperate this week.

You should go to the Silkie thread. Put up a picture of your Silkie eggs that are in the bator. They love pictures, and will be wanting to see the babies when they hatch. It's a fun thread, and, it moves kind of fast..it's fun. I have my baby on their that I kept. Like I said, they love pictures on that thread!

Good grief! You do have an interesting life. What do you do about killer equines? I have one that tries to stomp cats, unfortunately with some success, and have no clue how to stop it.

After having such bad luck with shipped eggs this time, 3 of 36 set (much better in the past) I was convinced I wouldn't ship eggs any longer. Maybe, I'm just done with hatching altogether, I thought. I contacted a breeder I had some after Easter eggs lined up to get and explained this to her. She suggested I get chicks from her instead as she has a brooder full of just the colors I'm looking for. Of course! This makes perfect sense and would be soo much cheaper AND I would be assured of just the colors I want and not too much of one or the other. Finally! A decision! I immediately went right to ebay and bought a new egg tray for the incubator. I can quit hatching ANY time I want!! Now, to find some eggs (other than the ones I already have lined up

).

Do you know if the Lice came from new chickens to your flock or from wild birds? Hopefully after all of the initial work they will be gone soon.
