I can quit hatching ANY time I want!!

:lau  I've already started saying this! It is, indeed, a disease, isn't it? :lau

I have had an incubator running non-stop since December on the set day for the NYD hatchalong.  That's kind of a lie, I actually have three of them running.

Let me see, my electric bill has been hovering in the vicinity of $400 a month for many months now............incubators, brooders, heat lamps................hmmmmmm, do I see a connection???

Deb

You should invest in a ecoglo, those things are wonderful. It is well worth the money. I.think I may buy the bigger one. I just got my electric bill down to 67$ I thought the electric company gave me the wrong bill. No it was a actual reading. About fell off my chair.
AND CAN'T STOP HATCHING ANYTIME I WANT.

Admit I've not read every single post, but with that said ~ I have a question ~ have any of you raised only the broilers or heavies? We have so many varmints here way out in the country (without a dog anymore) that I just can't make anything safe enough to try the whole chicken raising experience again cuz the losses are huge and so very sad.

Thinking that the 3 months of raising only meat birds just might make it through. Any suggestions, advise or comments? All are welcome and thank you in advance!

I saw a comparison of electricity cost using the ecoglow compared to a heat light. The ecogolow paid for itself in a short period of time.

Get it from Brinsea and use whatever the discount code is. It's cheaper from them usually. SunnyDawn seems to know the current code every time.

My first attempt at raising meat birds was when I first moved to the country. The grow out pen was not secured (out of ignorance on my part or at least being naive), one night a skunk came in and killed all 25 of my birds. It ate off many of their heads, killed them all and just left the carcasses lying there, the carnage was devastating.

Same house fifteen years later, I raised quite a few batches of meat birds. Still no pen top or house for them, but better fencing and closer to the house. They all matured fine with no incident.

Good luck in what you decide.

Funny you should say that, I already have the 50 on it's way, got the confirmation email last night (and the current code is FRESH). It's really only going to replace the heat lamp in my overflow brooder. Besides the three incubators, I have one of these.

But I sometimes have to kick the chicks out of the top heated brooder, into the middle battery. If I think they still need some heat I use a heat lamp. Now I'm going to replace that with the Ecoglow50 and it will work better all around. Once they get kicked out of the bottom battery, they are out to the shed grow out pen, then out to an outside pen.

Okay, I admit it, I am addicted.

Do you know if the Lice came from new chickens to your flock or from wild birds? Hopefully after all of the initial work they will be gone soon.

Ron
Thanks! Well, we're not sure where the lice came from, but we did add pullets to our flock. We quarantined them to make sure they had no diseases, but never examined them for lice. Stupid, I know. We can almost never catch a chicken except in the dead of night. You should have seen our chase scene yesterday  . I do know we had mites earlier. I'm hoping we can get them under control. For now, DH is insisting on organic methods. He has become the king of chicken dusting.
