Mail order chicks

I can't find chicks locally. I am afraid to order day old chicks because I worry that I would lose many of them due to the stress of shipping. Is it a legitimate worry? I don't think my kids would handle it well at all.

It is. maybe put an ad up in your local craigslist for chicks?

I found some but I decided to wait so I can fix my coop properly. The guy that had this place before needs to have his butt kicked over the state of the coop. I had to burn the nesting boxes because they were full of manure. I will have my hands full tending to that and the 6 I already have. I could have gotten Easter eggers and some lavender orpingtons.

I just received my mail order chicks this morning. All are happy and active. They are already eating, drinking, and crawling under their momma heating pad. I suggest researching as many hatcheries as possible. Look at their guarantees and read reviews about the hatchery. I chose one that was only 90 minutes from me so I knew the chicks would be delivered the day after hatching.

So I did a quick Google map search. First using Indian Land, SC (your location), then I searched "nearby" using 2 terms "Chicken breeder" and then "chicken hatchery". Here are the screen shots of what came up - might be helpful. Of course, Google is not perfect and I see "Pilgrim's Pride Corporation" which is unlikely to be a source of live chickens...just sayin'. Maybe several of these are processors, but between the 2 maps, you might find one you can drive to.

contact any feed stores in your area. The problem I read about but did not experience is that mail order does not sex them. So you may not know what you are getting and I did not want to take the chance of getting rosters. Good luck
