Looks like Maine was able to pass through a ballot initiative their Right to Food Amendment. Politically there was a lot of confusion on both sides of the aisle on this measure and many were unclear of what the intended outcome was. Reading the bill in its entirety though it looks to legalize backyard chickens and all other food production for personal consumption and homestead sale. My grandparents live in Maine near Bangor and have been keeping chickens and goats for a couple of decades even though it was against their township's bylaws. Hopefully this initiative will allow more people to take control of where their food comes from and further secure our food system. Anyone from Maine able to shed anymore light on what this looks like for chicken keepers and homesteaders as a whole?
