I'm wanting to build the girls' feeder soon, and am wondering if cedar wood is safe to keep their pellets in. It would be convenient since I have some leftover cedar planks from making the coop's siding.

I wouldn't, the oils in the wood wouldn't be good to ingest.

I'v always just used pine.

The concerns that I have read concerning cedar have to do with the dust from shavings. I would think a feeder made from planks would not present the same problem.

Most of the time cedar is that rough cut used to make fences with. I would use it.

My coops are made from rough cedar. I guess if you have another option. I've never seen any of my chickens eating wood.

But it still has oil in it.

I have always been told that cedar is toxic to chickens, so my first choice would be another option, but I have not done much research on the topic. If someone were to give me something very useful for chicks made of cedar, I would definitely look further into it before declining.

Thanks for the replies! And sorry I have not responded sooner; I've gotten swamped with other stuff. I went ahead and bought some pine, just in case. I still have some things to fix on it, but I think it's going well :)
