Making a hen broody...im desprite

time might be your best allie. I just had a buff orphington go broody. I think it was too cool here. I tried removing the eggs, tried piling fake eggs.... nothing, just jump off the nest and laugh at me.

Then she went! So good luck, it is kind of a luck of the draw. mk

One thing is for sure....when you decide you don't want chicks anymore or you don't have any eggs available, one of your hens is going to .

I have had 2 partridge rocks and a white orpington go broody on me recently. My partridge rocks are more persistent than the white orpington hen. These are the first hens I have ever had go broody on me.

When raising animals of any breed, we must never lose sight of the fact that they are controlled by their genetics. They are not machines, and we can not successfully force them to do that which they are not genetically programmed to do. That being said, I have known of white leghorns that went broody. Go figure.

Let's see...how to make a hen go broody? After two and a half years I still don't know what sets them off.

Be careful what you wish for.

I remember a post a long time ago from a fellow who claimed he made them go broody by putting them in a darkened cage for a couple of days. On fake eggs, I suppose.

I have had 3 go broody lately who are over 3 years old, who never went broody before.
