Making a sandbox for the chickens

I want to put a wooden box in the chicken run, fill it with sand and put some poultry dust in it. I was wondering if it would be safe because I didn't know if the chickens would try to eat the sand or dust. I have Prozap garden & poultry dust.

I looked it up, Prozap contains pyrethrin, which is irritating to the eyes. Personally, I would not put it in a dust bath box.

So, how do you really use the dust? Just sprinkle it on their backs?
