hi, i am really wanting to sew up some goat blankets for my very near future goat babies, but i am wondering how they fasten in the front and under the belly? i can draft a pattern easily but i am unsure how they fasten.
A really easy kid banket is a child's sweatshirt. Some people cut off the sleeve bands to use around the neck of the kid (if the bands aren't too small) as either a neck warmer or to help hold closed the actual sweatshirt. You put the kids front legs through the arms of the sweatshirt and may have to use something to tie it up around their belly (or may not depending on the design and size of kid). You also may have to cut an appropriate hole for little boy parts.
thats a good idea!
i will have to do that as well, since i have tons of those laying around.
i am trying to use up some fabric i have had forever so hopefully i can come up with a good design.
My friend makes her dog little doggie coats from remenants of Polar Fleece cause it doesn't frey and doesn't need hemming. has it sewn across the chest so it slips over their heads, open underneath with a wide strap/buckle around the back and belly, just behind the front legs. I wouldn't put a second strap like horse blankets have, because goats kicking around might get a leg caught in that, especially playful kids.
I think a croup strap for a goat would be good too, to keep it in place better... might get messy though. not sure how I'd do that though.
Polar fleece is slightly stretchy and very forgiving though.
I've used ones with both velcro & with snaps. The snaps are better because the velcro gets clogged with hay, dirt, hair, etc and stops working until it's cleaned out...I need to order some more because my goat is due any day now and it's VERY cold outside!
Motherof5boys1girl: If you have a few extra boy colored sweatshirts that are small, I'd pay you for shipping!!!
My DH refuses to let me put our DD's old sweatshirt on our Bull Terrier because he's a boy..... such sexist attitudes
I can't see going out and buying brand new ones just to put on a dog....
I did like the fleece idea.... I have some horse pattern fleece and I'm wondering if you could make it like a poncho but have snaps on the arms to keep them closed??
DD has some stuffed animals I might be able to try this out on as I'm not a seamstress.
