Making your own dog food.

I could see quail as an easy meal. Just snap the neck and give to the dog whole. I know people who do that and the dogs looks great. Of course, you should feed a range of food, but I could see quail as an excellent source.

Here are some things we feed raw to our dogs

Rabbit
Venison
Fish
Quail
Beef
Turkey
Chicken

I do not feed pork unless it the the skin and that is only as a very rare treat, IE pig ears.

We do not feed veggies or fruit either except as treats. They have a hard time processing them even if they do enjoy them.

I do skin the meat. I know some people leave it whole, I prefer not to.

Why shouldn't one feed pork to dogs? Just wondering. I don't mean raw, but cooked? I've read that before but I can't seem to find out why. We get a local pig every year and in the spring I like to clean out the freezer and cook up what's left for the dogs but I keep hearing not to.

I, too, have read a few times not to feed dogs pork. I don't know if it's specifically raw, or also cooked, but it makes me wonder if pork is actually bad for us as well

pork is not bad for them,,if its wild pork I would freeze first for 3-4 weeks, because of worms in the meat,,then feed raw..but domestic animals are fine to feed fresh raw,,as long as they have been dewormed, and most are if they are being raised or used for breeding human consumption meat.

We have been making our own dog food for 3 months now and our dogs love it. We buy our meat...whatever is on sale....cook it up with cooked brown rice and some scrambled eggs. Some times we throw in a cheap can of veggies.... They are happy campers

I haven't even written my "official" introduction post yet, but this is exactly what I came looking for. TipsyDog, you say you know people who feed fresh-killed whole quail, do they bleed them out at all, partially pluck, or nothing at all?
I have been taught not to feed either pork or venison without some prep, either cooking or freezing, due to commonly heavy parasite loads. Most of the raw feeders I've queried will feed raw pork adn rabbit from local farmers with known husbandry practices, but wild game is always prepped one way or another.

I feed whole prey whenever possible,,this includes road kill deer, and I dont do anything special with it,,tho whole prey deer is only in the winter months,,in the warmer time I do cut up and freeze for the stink factor..as for chickens, ducks, geese rabbit I just kill and give to them..I cut in half or quarters depending on how big the animal,as one GSD doesnt need a 15 lb goose in one setting,so I split a goose between 2 GSD,1 aussi,1 minpin and 3 shibas..but I dont remove anything as far as feathers or fur.

The people I know snap the quail's neck and give it to the dog. No bleeding, no plucking. I guess it comes down to - would a dog bleed or pluck their prey in the wild? That's their motto and the dogs eat everything and look great.
