Making your winter feed now: silage

Chickens don't have the mechanisms to utilize silage like multi-stomached animals.  


Can you explain further?

Free-ranged birds eat a heck of a lot of fresh plant matter. Utilizing a silaging process, as I understand it, mostly converts the sugars to VFAs (which can be utilized by chickens) plus adds some B-vitamins.
 
This might sound stupid, but if you have a food vacuum sealer, could you not make 1gallon bags of silage nicely sealed in daily sized bags for 6 or 8 chickens?

I am thinking I am going to try that...I have roughly one grass cutting left this year...should be an interesting experiment.
