Where do I buy treatment and how much? He is 6 inches tall. Full grown about, 4 months old or so. He is a red cock with orange highlights. Blood is already coming out. I live in Iowa

Hi there! I am sorry to hear he is feeling bad...it's that time of year!

To treat Coccidiosis, I use Sulmet. You can find at your local feed store for about $10. Mix 2 tablespoons in 1 gallon of water and treat him for about for about a week. This should make him feel better. Make sure that if you have any other birds that you treat them as well...it is very contageous! You should clean your incubator if you have one and make sure that it is disinfected after ever hatch. I lost most of my chicks last year from what I think was Coccidiosis in my incubator. They would hatch fine, and after a week (of healthy eating/drinking) they would just die with no signs at all. You should treat all your chicks at about one month to one and a half months of age for Coccidia even they appear fine, just to be safe and it starts them out on the right foot!
Wish you luck and hope he feels better!

Hi,
I'm doing the same now. Just lost 13 Rare beed chicks to cocci. Everything has been stepped up a level. cleaning is at a max and burned all bedding to prevent spread.
Everything is now being treated even tho no signs are showing. Stressfull time.
The hardest part is getting them thro the first few days.
good luck and fingers crossed.

Once they are over it after you treat them, they should be immune. Expose them to the soil early and use medicated feeds to help them build up immunity. It is not a bacteria, but a oocyst found in soils so there is no getting rid of it. When it gets damp and warm, they multiply fast and can overwhelm the birds systems. They normally will have a small load at all times but it only hits them hard if they haven't built up resistance or get sick for another reason.
