male button quail will not shut up!

hiya
i’ve had my male and female quail for just under a year now and recently my male will not stop growling and crowing at stupid hours of the night/morning

i have tried so many things to keep him quiet and can not figure out why he’s doing this. the room he is in is now kept pitch black to try and help he is also never away from his mate so he can’t be calling for her.
any advice or tips would be highly appreciated because he is driving me insane!

Is the hen rejecting him? Is she molting? Sometimes my boys just don't understand "not tonight dear, I have a headache." Reduced lighting may also play a role in mating routines.

i haven’t seen her reject him yet but that could be a possibility? i’ll keep an eye on them to see, so far seems like he’s just a stubborn little thing who likes to be heard

My boys have been crowing all the time, but two of them lost mates recently.

I'd probably give the birds reduced daylight hours, but not keep them in the dark. That's probably more confusing to them. They are together, right?

You eat buttons? I wouldn't think there would be enough to eat on them to be worth it.

oh no. They're not buttons. But I assume quail have the same traits no matter which type they are.

Actually, no. Coturnix are 1 roo for 3-7 hens. Buttons and several other types of quail go in pairs. They can all be aggressive, but it varies from species to species. Their crows also sound very different.
