Hi All,
I have a male emu with three new baby chicks. Unfortunately my house sold and I have to move but the male is off the charts protective and super aggressive right now. How do I sedate him and get them moved to there new home? Vets not been helpful as of yet.

Oh dear! You must wait for further advice from owners of captive birds. But your situation is truly unenviable. Sedation sounds like it'll literally be your option.

As Wild Emu Guy, my thoughts are:

when talking about emu aggression, the pivotal thing is whether they have room to run away. My joke is always about emus only being dangerous if you are trying to back them into a corner, to stuff them in a bag.

Also: I advise teaching your emus to recognise a sound associated with food -- it's not gonna help you this time, but maybe next. If your sillies ever need to be lured out of somewhere, you can sit outside, and tap the bottom of a tin dish (the sound mine know). They will come to the sound.

The point is: if you can get the chicks to go where you want, Dad will likely follow -- ??

But today? It'll be months before this parenting male is likely to become less protective. Any scheme involving chasing them/driving them/trapping them may induce the sort of panic that results in injuries.

If sedation, I guess it'd have to be rendering Dad outright unconscious; trussing him like a chicken (massively powerful legs!); carrying him holus bolus into a vehicle; going back and catching the chicks.

We look forward to hearing how you fare with this.

So I could not find a vet I contacted pretty much anybody in the area who had any expertise including two zoos.
I finally got a hold of a ranch that deals in raising emus and had to hire a couple guys from there to drive up 400 miles to capture them and move them to the new home.
They even said vets just don’t understand them and so they won’t even treat them they have to figure everything out on their own and sometimes just have to put them down.

but they got moved safely and not sure they’re happy yet but give them a couple days to relax I’m sure they’ll settle in.
Thanks

'They even said vets just don’t understand them' This has been a refrain over years.

'not sure they’re happy yet'

First: you must check their new habitat for screws, nails, or shiny things (which they'll swallow).

And: minimise noise and movement around them as best you can for a few days. Give them some treats, like chopped fruit. If they are used to you, you might sit with them, and talk to them.

Yes. Lots of goodies for them and conversation. I figure it will take a few days to settle down and really relax.

Sorry I haven’t been on and somehow it doesn’t send me an email when there’s a new message.

they are located in Southern California

Normally my emails are pretty docile but because he’s a brand new father with baby chicks he was super super aggressive for that reason and that’s the only reason I hired somebody otherwise I would just rent a U-Haul trailer the smallest one they make I throw a rubber mat in the bottom and they just lay down for the drive
