I am a current owner of 3 Japanese quails (male) who have not been getting along recently.
I love my quails and have been giving them as much as I can provide. I have been having issues being allowed to build a large outdoor aviary for them and have been keeping them in a 43in x20in area (Large dog crate plus room outside of that) that had a large feed dish and water. They have gone from making noises at 6:33 am sharp to making no happy noises and attacking each other. I have tried to let them run around more but even then it is constant fighting. Two of my quails (Cashew and Hazlenut) have bald spots on the backs of their necks that I have now begun treating twice a day with ointments.
I have separated Penut who does not have any wounds and seems to be starting the majority of the fights. I do not understand how he has gone from a kind bird who keeps to himself to this.
I am worried for my birds and don't know what to do for now since I am not being
allowed to expand their space. Is there anything to help stop the fighting and help regrow the neck feathers and coarse feeling all over their bodies (on their feathers)? I think it may be time to give them away to a better home seeing as my resources are becoming less and stricter.
(Will add images tomorrow when I reapply medication)
