Male swan all alone

My wife and I recently stayed at a Florida resort hotel where to my surprise living in a protected area was a single swan. He looked grumpy and very territorial.

Question: are swans not meant to be paired with a mate ? I feel
Terrible for the poor thing but don’t know much about swans to understand if this is ok ?

I would actually offer to buy a mate for the poor thing if necessary.

There was a lone male mute swan near my mom's assisted living complex in FL. They had a pair, but the female died. It could be the same at the hotel. Btw, mute swans are very expensive-$$$$. I visited her in June, and he had been sent back to the breeder. They still have black necked swans that don't have to be confined like the mute. I love swans!

My Black Australian male swan, Gunther is by himself now. Pretty sure he is lonesome for companion.
