I'm still waiting patiently for my mallard girls to get thier acts together again. I set two eggs from them a about two weeks ago, but the babies died within the first week of incubation

so I'll just let them do it thierselves! meh!

Hello everyone!

I now am the proud parent of 4 mallard ducklings! Duckling #4 had to be helped out a bit. It was a little bloody and shakey at first, but is now doing well. I am just glad that 4 outof 6 eggs hatched! Thanks again to everyones help and support. I am trying to post pictures, but have never done so on BYC. I have them uploaded, just need to get them here. Keep an eye out and wish me luck!

They sure are cute. Thanks for the pics, it's always nice to see the results of all the worry we do with you during the hatch lol.

once duck eggs have piped it takes between 24 and 48 hours for them to finish hatching. during that time the piped area of the egg should be facing up. If after 48 hours the duckling has not come out of the egg you can gently attempt to enlarge any cracks that are already there. be very careful doing this and only attempt to do so if you are certain the duckling is unable to complete the hatch on its own. stop enlarging the crack immediently if you see blood.

Duck eggs do best laying on their side not sitting up.

Hi, I've got a mallard duckling piping, but he's nowhere the air sac! He is on the side, chirping loudly from start to now, he has a dry membrane(not shrinkwrapped) and after twelve hours we helped him to breathe by making a hole for him that he made bigger, my question is with a dry membrane did I do the right thing? We have the humidity up and are keeping it up but it doesn't seem to be helping? There are two wash rags pushed against the egg to try and get the membrane to soften which appears to be working a little bit. He is currently trying to zip, but it's horizontal! Will I need to assist after 48 hrs? He's malpositioned which is my fault I didn't know until it was to late to flip him that blunt end goes up. He tried to make it to the air sac after that but apparently decided hatching was a better idea!
