mallard... how do you tell the sex?

I was told this was a full blooded mallard. When will I be able to tell if it male or female? It is starting to kind of make a quacky sound instead of just peeping.

If it's making a quaking noise it's a girl.....boys don't quack, but that is not a mallard! Looks to be at least part runner.

That's what we thought too... I know the little boy had runner ducks & a few other breeds too. He had specifically mated his mallards, but I guess another drake got frisky too

Should we try and get another female then or would a male be better for companionship?

ETA: What noise does a drake make?

One more question... can any duck mate with any other breed/mixed breed of duck?
