mallard or rouen?

Is this really an accurate way to tell? I have my rouen ducks (I'm certain that's what they are as in Canada you are not allowed to have a mallard unless you have proper permits, I believe) and I was looking at my six ducklings yesterday and only one of them has the full two eyestrips, some have only one or one with a spot. One is half pekin/rouen and it's obvious...here is a picture I posted earlier but you can see there is one with the two and one that doesn't....

mine had 2 eyes stripes if you look at the pics, however they have grown to nowhere near the size a rouen should

You have 2 rouens. Don't automatically think they can't fly though. Some rouens CAN fly, just not very far or high because they are so heavy.

Gee... That feed store wouldn't be Tractor Supply would it? Because the same thing happened to me this year. And because it did happen I have now learned about the eye stripe thing.

Yes, those are Rouens and you will LOVE them!

My Rouen}}}Lucky Ducky has 1 stripe. And my Adult Rouen Ducks (Drake & Hen) are big ducks & they CAN FLY.. not far but they fly from their pen to the other ducks pen.. up and over. The fence was only approx. 4 feet high but still managed to get over without a runway.. lol Lucky has tried to fly a couple times when he was out free ranging in a larger fenced area but so far nothing major. They are great ducks. The hen is a very good & protective mother. Lucky is the Best, I hatched him & he is the friendliest ever. He will be 16 weeks old tomorrow. Good luck with your duckies, ~Julie~

He's ALL Rouen... here is the Drake & Hen (mom & dad)

His feet look just like the Hens (moms) light orange with just a little black between the toes(well not toes but black on the web part). And the Rouen Drake was the Only Possible Father. Last month(May22nd) the same Rouen Hen Hatched 12 babies & 9 of them had Jet Black legs and feet and beaks. 1 had Black feet with part of their legs orange. 2 of the babies had Orange feet with a spot of black on them & orange legs, with their Bodies More Yellow, Less Black. 1 of those babies had yellow on the back of its head, which turned WHITE And 10 were dark colored with parts/sections yellow(same markings) I had 6 of them till they were 3 weeks old because it was VERY hard trying to get them from the mom(very protective). ~I have pictures of them I just never got around to down loading them to my computer. I'll post them when I do. ~Julie~

Thanks Julie

I was beginning to wonder about this. My rouens are big ducks, although I don't think as big as some (pet quality). They free range and I have seen them with a wild mallard - the difference was quite surprising. Both my drake and my duck can "fly" not far and it's not graceful

- but it's an accomplishment anyway and they are proud when they get over the fence

. On windy, rainy days both of them manage to fly out of their run. Never together, it's just one or the other. Once they've done it - they are more then a little upset when the pekins can't do the same! They grudgingly come back in, heads low, when I open the door to the run for them and the pekins always yell (heads bobbing, lots of quacking) at them for being "bad".
