Thanks Kevin I hadn't heard it said on here at what age they actually fly fly. I have been watching mine still trying to decide about wing cutting. They are a little over 3months old, but they only get a couple feet off the ground now. They hardly ever even try to fly and when they do our pekin starts quacking very loudly at them. They always come waddling back to her when she does that.

It's amazing the same duck that hated them when we first got them, has sort of adopted them now. She stands guard over them when they take a nap while free ranging. She really takes the old mother hen thing literally she sounds just like she is scolding them sometimes.

Those times ar the best! When mine stared to fly it was the daily entertainment. And when it came to them finding each other once landed they would just stic ther heads up super high and do like the panic calls. hahahaha

Ah not a problem at all. I didn't clip mine at first but eventually they wanted to fly a little to far

so they were clipped. Glad your other duck came around about them

I have one Mallard Hen left. Our neighbor's mallards randomly hatched out a batch last October (2011). So, we ended up with a lot of them. While ours did fly from pen to pen, they never left the farm. The girl that we have left will sometimes fly into the pen with our Dark Campbells and other times returns to our pen with our pet Pekin duck and Embden goose. If you're interested in getting mallards, I would suggest getting a few ducks to keep with them. Having others that can't fly around seems to keep them from wanting to leave. You could also clip their wing feathers on one wing to keep them from flying away. If you want a hen, the one I have is looking for a new home. I forgot to say, the other Mallards that we had sold, they did not fly away. Good to clarify this given the discussion.

I rescued some wild mallard ducklings with the hope that when ready i could release them and feel like I'd done a really good deed but when i released them they just stayed at home with ,my other ducks and are still living here after about a year. Each morning wen I let them out of the coop they spend about half an hour flying around the field and the neighbouring ones.

i have just rescued one mallard duckling from my collie eating him/her and i was wondering if i would get infertile eggs often if so i will let him/her live with my 6 chickens and if not i will set him free when he is old enough

Yes you will get infertile eggs. when they are laying.

They will most likely bully her but if you could make her an area where she can see them and them her but they can't get to her then they can start getting use to each other and by the time she is full size duck they can all be together. Is the duckling old enough to be with out extra heat? That's the only problem too the duckling may still need extra care till it feathers out.
