Mama and baby chick

So mama is very protective. But with me she seems to trust me. Is that possible? She ruffles up some but doesn't mind me getting close.
Anyone else she hisses and ruffles up. We are hoping to add 5 babies tonight when she's asleep. I really hope it works.

Oh yes! My hens always welcome me but throw a fit at others. It always makes me feel so happy to know they trust me!!

That makes me feel special!!! Have you added baby chicks to a mama before? I got day old chicks to put under her tonight but I am nervous. But if she trusts me, it may work right ? Lol, I hope!

I've personally never done it but I've heard that it works fine usually!

She took all 5 extra chicks in the daylight with no problem. I am beyond happy!!!

I had the same experience with an Autralorp. She hatched 5 chicks and then over the course of 3 days I added 8 more (in broad daylight) and she just kept taking them.
Mine was the same, she would puff up at me but allow me to handle the eggs or chicks or even pet her.
My Buff Orpington on the other hand would only take chicks I left under her in the dark....if she saw me try to add chicks she would go into attack mode.

I have a broody with 6 chicks that are a week old, and am going to add 4 chicks to her brood tomorrow, they will be about a day old. Hoping it works!

Good luck to you also! If you are worried, you can try putting the chicks under her at night; some people say it works better.

That is so cool! Now I want to see if I can add a few more.
