Mama Cat eating baby chicks?

Well, I think it's best to fine the owner the cost of the damage and cost to spay/neuter the cat and kittens. But then, that is not going to stop it killing the chickens. It's their nature to pounce on anything that moves. Lease laws are a necessity and should be enforced.

I hate working in my flowers and finding cat feces or not being able to sit outside due to cat urine where a tom has marked his territory. We have a lease law. We catch them and call animal control.

The original poster asked for ideas.

This isn't really the place to say another person's ideas are wrong.

Cats are predators. The momma cat has babies to care for and has found a safe place to live with a good food supply. She will most likely come back and keep killing the chicks.

Someone once told me that if you want to keep a cat around for mousing to feed it. It will stay for the food and mouse because of its instincts. Feeding the stray may reinforce it staying.

It's your chickens or the cat. It's what kind of lifestyle you want for your chickens.

It might be cheaper to mail to someone that has a no-kill shelter near them and is willing to take the burden of off you.

Sundown, Again I am asking that you please reread the rules of this forum.
Debates on the right and wrong of killing predators are not permitted.

To refresh your memory

*Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. For instance, Trapping..this is a legal defence and it is not open for debate whether you prefer this method or not. This forum is designed as an aid to those who are having predator problems. It is not a debate forum on ethics.

When an animal starts hunting livestock, it is not a pet anymore it is a predator and this is what this forum is for...Dealing with predators.

Period end of discussion.

Perhaps it would be best if you didn't click on this forum.

There's no need for anyone to argue about this. What's right for some people isn't right for another. My Mom is a HUGE cat lover and would rather die then see one killed. I consider cats no different than coyotes or coons... just another predator. Stray dogs get shot on a daily basis around here... now THAT I could never do as I love dogs, but all these farmers have no qualms about it.

For those that love cats, mailing one to someone with a no kill shelter does sound like a wonderful idea!

Oops I posted before I saw your reply Terrie. I didnt mean to make anyone upset, I was just telling the OP what we do when we have a cat in the coop.

Feral cats are the largest predators of song birds!!! When we are hunting we take every opportunity to rid the countryside of these pests. You have seen firsthand the damage they can do. Get rid of the cat or you will have more issues with her.
