Mama Chicken was laying on two eggs. She passed away so I grabbed the eggs and put them in my incubator. I had no idea how long she had been laying on the eggs as it was a surprise to us she was even laying on eggs. A week later one egg hatched on Labor Day but the other one hasn't. I did candle the egg and there is something 3/4 quarters of the way grown in the egg but it hasn't hatched yet. Can the Mama chicken lay an egg a while past when she started laying on the first egg?? I don't know if this egg is still developing. How long should I keep it in the incubator? It is not smelling or anything so I'm not sure if something is still growing in there. The first little chicken is very healthy and spunky but lonely. :-( Thanks for any help!!

What color is this remaining egg? With a good strong light, you should be able to see movement if the chick is alive. (Unless the egg is blue, green, or very dark brown. And, even then, with proper lighting, you may see some movement.)Have you looked at the candling pics in the learning center? They will show you what you should be looking for. It's possible that Mama was sitting on the one egg and the second one got snuck into the nest at a later date.
