Hello, we had a baby chick hatch 3 days ago and mama has 2 more babies left to hatch. One egg was moving around this morning so I’m assuming it’ll hatch here in the next day or two. But the other still has like 3/4 days. Mama hasn’t gotten up since her baby hatched.. should i be concerned? Im not seeing poop either from her.. just the baby chick. She’s in her nest box about 2ft up. I put food and water next to them..

Hi,

Baby chicks can live 72 hours on the yolk they have just absorbed so don't necessarily need food/water until then, but usually most of us offer it and some do partake right away.

Your hen may have a baseball size poop when she does get up.

Two feet seems a pretty high distance for a chick to get down. Is there a ladder? If not, one idea is to move mom, the nest, and the chick to a cardboard box nest box. Just sit the box on its side and slide them all in there. Put their food/water right outside. It'll upset the hen for a minute or two until you're done, but she'll settle down once she realizes her chick and eggs are still under her. This way she and the chick can eat/drink and she'll still go right back to her eggs.

Hello!

I physically had to pick her up and put her on coop floor with baby and she took a huge poop lol! 😂 ive been able to get mama to eat and drink. Im going to work on the nest box to put in coop floor. Hopefully that’ll encourage her to get up and stretch her legs.

Shes been sitting now for over 3 weeks. Should i self incubate the last egg and once it hatches put
Baby chick under mama at night?

It’s been a while. How are the mama and chick(s) doing now?
