We have one rooster for 9 hens. We think he is a good rooster which we raised from an egg. The only problem is he is very aggressive when mounting the hens. Almost all our hens have multiple feathers missing and completely torn off their backs and wings. Almost to the raw skin. We’ve gotten a few saddles For the severe cases but don’t want to have to have a saddle on every hen. Any thoughts?

Regular rooster pedicure:

Pick him from the roost at dark, wrap him in an towel and clip the tip of his claws and spurs off. Then sand the rough ends nicely, so no sharp edges will be left to inflict injuries.

Some hens are more susceptible to this, their feathers beak easier. Also, feathers are getting old this time of year, getting ready for the molt.

Generally, bare back chickens bother people more than hens. If your girls are active, adoring him, and laying, don’t worry about it. A molt, and a little more age on the rooster will help all of them.
